Browsing at work

I doubt my company has the technical savvy to actually monitor internet activity. Why, you ask? We just got VOICE MAIL in the office a few months ago. They even had to hold a 2 hour workshop on how to use voice mail--"What, you mean I can actually CHECK MY MESSAGES when I'm not in the office???!!!!!" That might give you an idea of how behind my company is when it comes to IT.

Don't you worry... I scan your network periodically, and most of your management is reading internet porn anyways... might want to think about getting a firewall.

... all a competent IT employee needs to do is set time-windows for when certain net activities are allowed. Using a Unix based firewall, just have a cron job that alters the firewall rules at certain times of the day.
At our company, only the IT employees, the management, and our CAD employees may use the Internet during the day. Other employees can only use it during lunch and an hour after closing. Plus all web traffic goes through our proxy server, so I know who is looking at what websites.

You IT people scare the shit out of me....

Unlike the stories you've heard, some of us IT guys have more important things to do than check up on what the employees are looking at. Management likes instilling the fear that we could spy on what the employees are doing.
As for restriciting the employee internet usage, hey, if they want to surf the web they can use ADSL from home. If the employee is IT related (programming, CAD, etc...) then no limits on what they can do, but most of our employees are electricians, so there's no reason for them to use the web at work.
Yeah, IT guys might be scary, but it's a thankless job.
