Ayumi Hamasaki Deaf In Left Ear

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Jan 06, 2008 6:41 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Xinhua: Japanese pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki deaf in left ear
Japanese pop icon Ayumi Hamasaki wrote on her fan club website on Friday that she would continue singing despite losing her hearing in her left ear. Hamasaki said an ear examination last year confirmed her hearing loss. "Despite this news, I still wish to be a singer," she wrote. Hamasaki started to lose the hearing in her left ear in the summer of 2000 when momentary deafness forced her to cancel several concerts, according to a media report. The singer will start her second concert tour of Asia in April to mark the tenth anniversary of her singing career. The tour includes 19 concerts around Japan. The venues in other Asian countries have not yet been announced.

Coincidentally enough, Oliver Sacks, in his latest, Musicophilia, discusses how devastating the loss of stereo hearing can be for music lovers. They describe the music they once loved so much as sounding like Ayumi Hamasaki after the loss.

The good news is that over time, though, they seem to develop compensatory neural connections that help override this "Ayumi" effect.

I guess the good news is that if she does go totally deaf, at least she will be able to remain in the music business where she started off, as a talented composer.

Well, yeah, I was kinda wondering: if people who lose their hearing in one ear describe music as sounding like shiat - ie, like Ayumi - was does Ayumi hear when she loses the hearing in one ear? Some kind of infinite-Ayumi-feedback loop?

No it works backwards for her, since she started out hearing music as shit, when she lost her one ear it just became better.

Sooo...by that logic, her aesthetic sense will get better if she loses her vision.

Get that girl into a Skinner-ian sensory-isolation chamber STAT!

Oddly, this news appeared in English before it appeared in Japanese. It is being discussed on 2ch but their only source is the Xinhua news article above. In turn Xinhua say their source is crienet.com. I haven't yet seen a link to the fan club site where she has apparently written this comment. Sankei carries an article but they are also relying on the Xinhua report.

Hey, I don't care if she can sing, or if she's deaf. Any girl who wears a punky short skirt with multiple zippers for easy access and a Buzzcocks patch on the crotch is just fine with me. Even the trucker's hat doesn't spoil it.

GomiBrother is really sad for Hamazaki. They used to work together in the old days at Sun Music when he was a producer and she was a model.

Would you like to be the forceful object of my merciless affections?

Before you answer, I'm 6'9" in my bare feet and I weight 300lbs.

Careful around me though. If I get tired of goats, I might consider trying a brother in the closet! You know the old navy saying, "Any port in a storm"!

"Getting prettier" implies she is already in possession of a certain amount of prettytude, so no.

I think it was fg that had a thread a few years back (can't be arsed to find it now) showing pics from a Korean site that had pix of J-talento before they achieved big-time stardom, and the pic of the un-cosmetically-altered Ayumi showed a woman who was pretty damn plain, indeed well below the (fairly high) J-average. And her surgical overhaul has just made her look freakish, IMO. Glad she doesn't seem to have sparked a plastic surgery trend in Japan.
