Bottom of the 5th with the score tied at 2..

Previously, a couple solo homers from the A's.. Small ball from the Giants..

Game on channel 4..

I noticed the fans are cheering like 'Americans'; no chanting, singing, etc..

I wasn't really paying attention and so didn't know that the games were on, but looking at the TV listings in the Japan Times, I see that the Red Sox-Tigers game was on TV between 3:00 and 4:25 this afternoon and, as GJ has pointed out, the A's-Giants game was on between 7:00 and 8:54 this evening.

You have to really wonder why MLB bothers to come over here. The stated purpose is to try to expand its audience, but since they clearly aren't getting any decent exposure, what's the point?

A quick check finds that Kurt Kiyoshi Suzuki was born in Hawaii and went to Cal State Fullerton.

I was wondering the same.. But they don't just cut these games]any[/I] televised game if it goes over it's allotted time..

If I were an avid fan, I would never watch baseball on TV.. But then, that's probably the point; the teams probably make more money putting people in stadium seats than what crap Japanese networks pay.. They probably think if they show the whole game on TV, no one would go to the games.. Just a thought.

Oh, and thanks for the Suzuki tidbit..

I know, but that just makes MLB's expectation that they can reach a greater audience by coming over here all the more inexplicable.

Just in case anyone is wondering, I pulled up the game on MLB.com's gameday. The 8th inning just ended and it's still knotted at 2.

2 outs in the top of the 9th and Rob Bowen hit an RBI double to put Oakland in the lead 3-2.

Since the A's and Sox start their regular season here in Japan, if they're still tied after 12 when they play, is it a tie?.. This is Japan..:p

GJ do you have any idea why they didn't schedule a Red Sox - Dragons game? I mean seeing the reigning World Series champs play the reigning Nippon Series champs would have certainly been more interesting that seeing them play the Giants and the Tigers. Even if it is only an exhibition game.

Ohp.. Game over..

I have no idea.. But that's a good question.

I'm sure it has everything to do with the Giants and Tigers being Japan's 'champions' no matter who actually wins the championship..

I kinda figured that. I guess that kind of explains why Japanese baseball is where it is, no PR savy AT ALL. I mean why give exposure to the teams with the saturated fan bases?

Just a heads up for people before they get sucked into either game today. They've got the same coverage as yesterday: A's-Tigers from 3:00 to 4:25 and Red Sox-Giants from 8:00 to 9:54.

Not to be a total curmudgeon here, but why are they having the Tigers play in Tokyo Dome? I mean the teams spent a reported 18 hours in a plane to get here, is a 3 hour shinkansen trip really going to kill them?

Has anyone seen any MLB activity (gatherings of fans, special promotions of some kind) around Tokyo? I was out at the Tokyo Dome yesterday but there wasn't much going on. The JRA betting booths seemed to be attracting more interest.

On TV last night, I saw a lot of token gaijin at the game.. But I don't know if they have anything organized; Billy Bean was there..

Wouldn't there be some MLB otaku website you could find all the info?..
