I think the point AK is making is bullshit. But I'm not sure his statistics are *that* far off. 1 in 7 may have been close a few years ago. It looks more like 1 in 11 now. this page is chock full of statistics.

At this point the statistics are about a year old, but MOJ states there are about 171,000 overstayers. This is easy for them to track accurately. But don't forget there are also people who snuck into the country illegally. While the MOJ can't count this number, they do have accurate deportation statistics, and I think they may be a good guide. They busted roughly 4 overstayers for every 1 alien who snuck in illegally. So I would guess there are probably about 40,000 illegal aliens who snuck in. Total illegal aliens: 211,000.

At the same time, there were about 2.1 million registered foreigners.

Assuming the overstayers and other illegals are not counted in the total for "registered aliens", I think 1 in 11 may be more like it as of 2007.

AK may be thinking of the statistics from when he left Japan (2003, I think). 1.9 million registered foreigners. 220,000 overstayers at that time, so using similar math to before I'd say about 270,000 illegal aliens. So we are talking 1 in 8 at that time.

Was stopped my first time in Japan in 1998, was in Osaka late at night with some girls. I showed them my passport and that was that.

Every other time I've encountered police they have been extremely helpful. Far more so than any in the States.

One time I was pulled over for speeding in Japan and the cop gave me a blowjob. In America, I got pulled over and the cop made me give him a blowjob. Now, which would you prefer?

Assuming in both instances the cop was male, and seeing as how I'm not gay (and there's nothing wrong with that AK, I'm not taking a dig at you), I would not like to receive or give a blowjob to a cop. On the other hand, no wonder you are so 'pro-cop'.

Random checks might work in a world where people randomly distributed themselves, but since the real world doesn't work that way, the sole benefit of random checks is to make fools feel safer without having any real impact on the problem they are intended to address. They also give the state the ability to exert more control over populations they deem "undesirable", but I don't know if I'd call that a benefit.

Thanks for all the info, but I'm referring more to how the fact that 1 in whatever foreigners being an illegal does not equate to having a 1 in whatever chance of randomly picking out a foreigner and nailing an illegal.

As an example, since something like over 70% of immigration violations in Japan are Chinese nationals picking white Australian Kusai Jiji out of the crowd already significantly lowers the odds of him being illegal, that's without taking into account all the other factors like location, the fact that he was with his Japanese family (and thus more than likely on a spouse visa, i.e. the most easily obtained visa type) etc. etc.

Also, I'd just like to say how much I love Japanese government documentation and it's complete lack of any type of index or TOC despite its 180 page length and the fact that you can automatically generate an index in adobe acrobat in 10 seconds...

It could be since Ji looks the more the part of the crook then the average crook, the cop will be hoping to nail a promotion for putting the grab on such a heinous felon and thread to J-mothers and daughters. Logical move...

I've been randomly stopped once. I refused to show my gaijin card, wrote down the officers name and badge number, and was eventually sent on my way without ever giving up one bit of information.

I even made a post about it here.

By the way, ignore AK, he from Georgia and thinks every nigger in a nice car and every spic with an accent should be stopped too.

Only once out of sheer "respect my authority" bastardry. The others were driving related and once for my own good. Passed out drunk on the street. Was taken to the cop shop while they phoned the missus to come and get me. I thought the father in law was going to cark it he was laughing so hard when I told him the story.

Your burakumin roots are showing. The stench of the slaughterhouse follows you for eternity.

I have a Japanese-American friend who was stopped but let go only after he was able to 'prove' to the police officer that he was a pure-blood Japper. How he did it, I have no idea. Probably pulled out his 3" penis.

it's funny how i just signed up today, and this is the first poll i see!

i've been stopped four times...because they've stopped my japanese husband. we both have ridiculous hair, because that's what our line of work requires, but while i would generally assume that two outrageous-looking people would have to be incredibly stupid to be carrying any drugs on them, apparently it's people like us [and not someone trying to look incognito] who do...or so the police regularly think. after having our hair searched three times, i realised we should just be friends, so now we are known well enough by the shibuya police to be able to say hello when we pass. :P

And search right through our clothes

They give him hell
They check him on the air

well...i guess when your hair is a giant mohawk made out of plastic tubes, it can stand out juuust a bit. :eye:

but honestly, i asked the police many times, 'don't you think if we were doing anything illegal, we'd look a little less obvious?' which was usually met with, 'well, you know how shibuya is...'

which never answers my question, but at least they're polite and we are on 'sharing small jokes while having our bags searched' level with them.

In the 34 years I have been here, I have been stop LOTS of times. Usually for random checks and moving violations. I have never been asked for my alien card during random checks and only once was I asked to show my alien card for a moving violation.

It is usually the U.S. Military Gestapo that I show my card to (show only, I never let them hold it).

I dunno why, but I have NEVER been stopped by the Japanese blues ever. Now that I've said that, I'll probably get stopped tonight after mass amounts of shochu and a few Cohiba's on my way home from R.

I did have the displeasure of being stopped before trying to enter Muse a few weeks ago. They've started some policy that you not only have to show identification, but they want to see your BUSINESS CARD as well. Of course, the Japanese folk were just walking right on in without showing anything though...

You'd think so, but then the folks carrying drugs around frequently aren't the brightest sort.

A former co-worker of mine (Japanese) has just recently finished a five-year sentence in Singapore for pot possession. In his case, his stupidity helped him: he'd been ripped off by the guy who sold it to him and was only carrying a small amount of real marijuana. Had he been carrying the amount he though he had, he might not have ever come back.

btw, welcome!

I have been here 7 years and the only interaction I have had was when I was biking home late at night and jumped a red-light. A cop (waiting with his bike) on the other side said abonai-yo and I replied daijoubu-yo and carried on. He never stopped me. This was in Chuo-ku, Tokyo.

I've been warned for J-walking but never asked for my card on the street. The only time i had to show them my card was when i went to the cops when some crazy guy was kind of stalking me.

I witnessed a a European guy being dragged outta Kyoto Station to the Koban over the weekend, he looked like he was going to shit his pants.
