Thanks for the replies, some considerably more helpful than others!

I always figured, once I had the visa, if I get treated like livestock I could probably leave Interact but continue to stay in Japan.

I guess there are jobs with smaller companies within Japan for decent English Teachers who don't want to be part of larger Interac/Jet program? And maybe the opportunity to live off private lessons, if you have decent Japanese and a head for business?

Hello All.
Name is jay.
I am currently living in the PRK (Peoples Republik of Kalifornia), but trying to move to the land of concrete, in about 2-2.5 years, once I finish school, and get better at Japanese.
Anyway so far this site has been helpfull, been learking and searching for some time now.

So we will see how things roll...

Wow. I didn't realise he was that popular in Japan.

And on the topic of "hamaki", here's some interesting trivia about the WWII Mitsubishi "Betty" bomber - aka "hamaki" to the Japanese:

Name's Dave. I've been in country way too long - 1 year in Nagasaki, 2 in Niigata, and 14+ in Osaka.

I stumbled in here from http://newsonjapan.com/

I like to go to Le Conesseuir (or however the hell you spell it!)---the Roppongi spot is the best I think, but they have a few others spread out across Tokyo (Shibuya, Akasaka, Ginza)... :smoking:

I think Nottu is in the Osaka area and we used to get some very good brands at the bars in the Ritz Charelton. They have (had?) a cigar cart and would bring it out for your selection and light it evenly for you.

Again, a bit pricey but they had some brands and supposedly real Cubans that you are hard pressed to find around Japan.

If you are really interested you might checkhere in Japanese, but a lot of English is available on the site.

There's a nice cigar bar in Kyoto. I was pretty hammered when I went there, but I think it's maybe a block or two north of Oike and two or three blocks west of the Kamogawa. Sorry I can't be more precise. It's on the second floor of the building that it's in.

Hi Mijonju,
Welcome to group.

My name is Kusai Jijii, and I've been a Fucked Gaijin for almost two decades. I started out as a working holiday maker. It was fun at first. So exotic, if you know what I mean. Hell, I guess I was a Japanphile at one stage, though my family and friends never seemed to care enough to confront me about my 'gaijinness' problem. Before I knew it, my life slowly started spinning out of control. I guess I hit rock bottom when I worked part-time for Nova. In retrospect, I could have died . With the help of FG, I've slowly started to put my shattered life back together. There is always hope. Even for the most fucked FG.

The moral of the story is this: As long as you are fucked up, you'll fit right in here. So go ahead, what's your affliction? (tick as appropriate)
