The End Of Print Gokko

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Jun 01, 2008 2:49 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Riso Kagaku, the manufacturers of Print Gokko have announced once again that they will cease production after 31 years. Mainly used to produce New Year greetings cards and T-shirt designs, the colour printing system was so popular that one third of households in Japan were said to own a machine. The company decided over two years ago to finish producing Print Gokkos because they had been rapidly overtaken by the diffusion of personal computers and colour printers. On top of that, it appears more people are sending email greetings rather than cards to mark special occasions. However, a campaign to "Save Gokko" was launched by overseas fans of the machine which seems to have kept it alive despite barely shifting any units in the shops. This recent announcement seems to be the real end now, however, and Riso Kagaku say that they will stop shipments at the end of June. Existing users will now have to rely on door-to-door salesman and internet sites to pick up ink and spare parts. "Save Gokko" say they will keep fighting.

This thing is far from being Eco-friendly.

I assure you it is. It is far less wasteful of resources than the usual alternative of inkjet printing.

inkjet printing also great, but, Gokko printings also very pretty.

Gokko is a kind of Japanese culture.

imagin, I present my postcard in my gallery, (because of, counting the visitor,)
every Japanese feel Gokko printing has more value, than inkjet one.

;) ;) ;)

Gokko can print colors no inkjet can, like gold, silver, or white. Try that on an inkjet! Gokko prints are serigraphs (silk screen prints) and serigraphy is a fine art.

Oh yes. I used a Gokko, but I don't have one now. I want a BIG Gokko, like A3 size. But it is just tiny postcard size.

I never made large serigraphs. I just want big silk screening to be as easy as a Gokko, easy enough for me.

I had a girlfriend who was a pro silk screen printer. She was very talented, printing works for big US artists like Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg, Serra, Ruscha, etc. She also printed T Shirts. Each type of printing is complicated in a different way. It looked like a LOT of work.

Yes, I decided to unpack my oil paints. But I have no place to work. Maybe I will paint plein air. I have a nice portable easel, just like Monet.

The digital camera boom has also finally claimed Print Club machines. Atlus, the company which first introduced them, has announced that it will pull out of the market by the end of March. (Japanese PDF press release here)
