HIT Travel Bankruptcy Hotline

Postby Mulboyne » Sat Jul 12, 2008 11:29 am

Yomiuri: HIT Travel bankruptcy hotline created
A hotline has been set up by a bankruptcy attorney for travelers, including English speakers, who had reserved tickets at a bankrupt travel agency and want to join the procedures to claim damages. Tokyo-based agency HIT Travel filed for bankruptcy June 26 at the Tokyo District Court. According to sources, HIT Travel started business operations in Shibuya Ward in February 1996. It sold travel tickets mainly through online services. HIT Travel had debts of 29 million yen when it filed for bankruptcy, and these included payments from 350 travelers. English speakers who desire a refund should contact the bankruptcy attorney at Tokyo Godo Law Firm through the hotline at (03) 3586-0516 or send a fax to (03) 5575-6233 including their name, address, and telephone number and details of monetary damages caused by the travel agency. The hotline is available until Thursday July 17 and is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is closed Saturday and Sunday.

A few FGs have been caught out by this one going under. Not as widely used as H.I.S. but they did advertise extensively in the English language press.

I thought the JATA provides insurance in these cases. If HIT was not a member of the JATA then people only have themselves to blame. If, on the other hand, they were a member of the JATA then I guess we're all in with a chance of getting arse raped when the agencies go under. Must admit I prefer dealing with the airline direct when possible but otherwise my better experiences have been with travel agencies where you need to deal in Japanese. The "English friendly" agencies are full of bullshit artists and scammers ime.

Many are, but not all.

If you've got any recommendations I'm all ears. I usually use Kansai Airport.

I use GM Travel in Shinjuku Gyoen-mae. http://www.gmtravel.net Do most of my bookings over the phone or email and they have been great. Never let me down and I do some odd travelling. Run by a Polish guy - Michael but all his staff speak great English too - there are only about 3-4 people working there - small and friendly with great service. They have all of my frequent flyer numbers on file and take care of everything.

I am in no way associated with this company other than as a customer.

I'll second GM if you are based in Tokyo. Good staff and never had a drama with them.
Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.
