Environmental Group Plans Giant Tokyo Bay Clean-Up

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Economic Times: Japanese plan world's largest cleanup
An environmental group in Japan said on Wednesday it is planning to hold what it hopes will be the world's largest clean-up, bringing 180,000 volunteers together to pick up trash. U-Project, a private group based in Chiba prefecture east of Tokyo, said they were calling on citizens to join in the clean-up around Tokyo Bay on November 24. "We are expecting at least 10 percent of the population of nine cities and towns in the prefecture in which we are calling for cooperation, which is about 180,000 people," said Ai Ueda, a staff member of U-Project. "Our group started picking up trash on Sundays with just about 20 people, but now there are about 400 people who join our regular clean-up rally on Sundays," she said. "We want to expand our movement to the whole prefecture," she added. Guinness World Records currently lists the largest clean-up as a gathering in August 2005 in which more than 140,000 people took part in the southern Japanese prefecture of Oita. "It's not about competition. It's about sharing goodwill, and it's about enjoying a nice feeling coming not only from picking up trash but also from working together and saying hello to passers-by," she said.

There is a typo there: They meant a U238 Project is needed to clean Tokyo Bay.

I don't think they'll be able to do anything about the benzene at the site proposed for the Tsukiji location.

Oh sure they can. Just follow normal industry practices, hire a bunch of homeless people to clean up the toxic site, nobody cares if they die. Well that's not completely true, some people would be HAPPY if they die.

In any case, it is futile to clean up the bay as long as it is still being actively polluted. Efforts would be better spent trying to stop further pollution. If you take care to not pollute the environment, the environment will take care of itself.

Charles, I tired over having everyone talk bad about our beautiful environment here in Tokyo. The pristine beaches and waters are a thig to behold. You should be ashamed for talking them down!

Well, note that I wasn't criticizing the environment, I was criticizing the usual business tactics to deal with pollution. And I wasn't just making it up. There was a famous incident in LA when I lived there in the 80s. Chiat-Day ad agency built a new showplace building, but the site was extremely contaminated with toxic waste. So the construction company hired homeless people and day laborers to dig up the contaminated soil and other toxic crap, and haul it to the toxic dump. They were given no safety equipment, just shovels, in total violation of about every environmental and workplace safety law on the books. It was only discovered when some of the workers started getting sick.

I worked construction most of my life - breathed my share of dust - could you explain the OSHA law that was violated when the proles were actually working?

No, that was the big scandal, the construction company knew it was heavily contaminated before they came up with the idea to hire day laborers. As I understand it, the site was so contaminated that it required special protective gear for all workers, total body suits and breathing equipment. But they just hired the workers and told them nothing about the contamination onsite. I don't know how they thought they'd get away with it. They got busted about halfway through the cleanup, I forget the details.
