I remember Taro or someone was keeping a J-medal tally for the last Olympics. Anyone know what it is so far?

I thought I misheard and had my girlfriend repeat it for me. I couldn't fucking believe it.

Anyway, it looks like W is enjoying the Olympics.

Swim suit doping

Postby canman » Mon Aug 11, 2008 12:50 pm

Should these Olympics have an asterisk beside the records being set in the pool. When every major swim suit manufacturer lets their sponsored swimmers use the new Speedo, there has to be something going on. But what if a swimmer federation was not able to buy the suit, or their sponsor wouldn't let them compete in the Speedo, doesn't that make the records a little dubious. I think they should all be given the suit and then see what happens. I was glad to see Kitajima a little more humble this time, and man the US relay team was good. They came back to nip the French right at the end. What an exciting race.

if you consider that an athletic action you must have extraordinarily low standards.

Oh I saw that. In fact, a rerun just came on now as I was typing this. What an explosive finish.

I am particularly enjoying the Olympics with my TiVo. I turn on the show and hit pause. Then I go do other things for a while so the buffer can fill. When I start the show again, I can fast forward through all the sportscaster blather and silly biographies of the athletes that they run over and over. I can scan through 30 minutes of Olympics and less than 10 minutes is actual Olympic competition, sometimes way less.

Badminton was included for the first time in Barcelona but it has been a Commonwealth Games event since 1966 so was always on the verge.

What the hell was that sport I caught last night? Some women's teams were playing what looked like a cross between basketball and soccer. They were dribbling a little tiny basketball, and trying to toss it into a net about the size of a hockey goal. WTF was that?

Speaking of badminton, what were those testosteriod apes that Shiota and Ogura were playing against last night? I wasn't sure that eunichs are allowed to compete in women's events. One look at those two might even cure Greji of YBF.

The scary thing dimwit, I teach about 13 of these so called girls. They all belong to the schools softball team, but they would give any of the boys in the school a run for their money. Since this is my first year teaching there, I had to look down and check to see if they were wearing a skirt or not to be sure they were a girl or guy.
By the way, I don't know the proper etiquette of badminton, but is it usually so raucous a sport. The Chinese fans were really into it last night. Its too bad the Japanese pair lost, they were a couple of cuties.

You haven't seen nothing yet. Just wait until the women's shot put and you'll start seeing grunting dikes.

I could tolerate badminton as a sport if they all played in high heels

Besides steroids they should be testing for gender this Olympics. Im still convinced some of the Chinese "women" judoka are men. Add the Japanese "womens" softball team to the list of suspects too. Why is it a team requirement they all look like teenage boys with mullets?!

Two things I noticed:
1) What's wrong with her posture...scoliosis?
2) Her legs would come in handy, if I needed to pick a piece of yakuniku from between my teeth. Note: I'm not claiming that I am Japanese and have a bad set of choppers with enough space between them to drive a Mack truck.

Spanish basketball team poses for offensive picture
By Chris Chase

Image

Spain's Olympic basketball team posed for an advertisement prior to the Games which appears to show all its players slanting their eyes, a move that could offend its Olympic hosts in Beijing. The ads, for a Spanish courier company, appeared in the Spanish-language newspaper La Marca.

As the uproar over the picture has grown today, more information about the advertising shot has come to light. The New York Times reports that Spain's basketball team is sponsored by Li-Ning Footwear, a Chinese company founded by Li Ning, the final torchbearer who was hoisted along the top of Beijing National Stadium during the Olympic Opening Ceremony finale. The ad reportedly references the Spanish team recently extending their contract with the footwear giant for another four years.

The Spanish-language paper El Mundo has a piece debating whether the ad was racist that basically calls out the British press for trying to smear Spain's good name. But they miss the point. Whether the picture was made in good fun is irrelevant. It was a ridiculous idea that was bound to upset a lot of people.

It's baffling that nobody involved in the picture -- from the photographers to the players -- even seemed to consider that this ad would be looked at negatively. Did it not occur to somebody that it might not be a good idea to mock an entire continent before the world's largest athletic competition that, by the way, happens to take place on that continent. Were they not aware of an invention called "the Internet" that allows pictures taken in Spain to be transmitted all over the world for the eyes of everyone?

And now that the inevitable controversy has hit, they're still defending themselves when a simple, "the ad was in poor taste, we apologize" would have sufficed. This story would be slowing down if the Spanish Basketball team had apologized immediately. Now it's just picking up steam.

The Organization of Chinese-Americans has released multiple statements condemning the picture. George Wu, deputy director of the group, said, "it is unfortunate that this type of imagery would rear its head during something that is supposed to be a time of world unity." Response in Beijing has been muted so far.

Madrid is thought to be one of the frontrunners to land the 2016 Summer Games (the site will be announced next year). Could this controversy hurt Spain's chances of landing another Olympics?

Interestingly, the Spanish basketball team took on China tonight, winning 85-75 in overtime. No word on whether Pau Gasol was on the receiving end of any elbows from Yao Ming. The Chinese crowd did have a message for the Spaniards though, booing vigorously during the game.

And to think there was a time the Japanese were scared shitless of the Mongols. Now they only have to worry about the Chinese, North Koreans, South Koreans, awww fuck it, most of Asia.

Why does every news outlet say it's his "right elbow?" did they not watch the video?

Also, they should shield that kind of thing. The guy is in tremendous pain and his career has just taken a major hit. Everybody saw the injury happen. Isn't that enough for you?

No kidding, I was watching a match and I honestly thought that a Chinese guy was fighting a women for a second. Then my friend (Japanese) came in and said the exact same thing.

Hmmmm. The original video is gone now, and I've since seen pics that show it was his right elbow. I'd swear that what I saw was his left elbow going out though.

Either the video was somehow flipped or I gotta ease up on the beers. :)

Nope. Gotta ease up on the beers. It could be your memory played a trick on you since it was the left side of your screen that his right elbow was on until he fell over and rolled onto his back.
