My two cents

Yes, a good Whisky will teach you to drink slowly, But I have found that a particularly outstanding one gets me to drink more in total.

Just for the record, Islay Malts with the smokey/peaty flavours and a small dribble of cold SUPER clean water in it on a cold night with a roaring fire................................................. bliss!

Someone mentioned "Hibiki" by Suntory earlier in the thread, I've had it on numerous occasions and I find whilst it is very palatable, there are other Japanese single malts of equal merit, Nikka's Yoiichi for one, just as good, and far cheaper. Has anyone tried it?
Another I like by Nikka is Miyagikyo though it has a slight soapy taste which yoiichi doesn't. I'm of course talking about the standard 12yr one's. If anyone would be willing to send me a few bottles of the older 30yr stuff, I'll be glad to try it and let you know what I think!
The higher priced Japanese single malts are what I call boutique malts, great tasting, but with a short history and dubious future. Consistency over time is important.
Thank you for letting me ramble on, but this is a very important topic.

What do you guys do for clean water at home? Do you buy your favorite brand of bottled water or use a Brita or something?

Adding water to a good Scotch is sacrilege.

Actually, no, adding a tiny amount of untainted water to a good whisky releases the flavour. By a tiny amount I mean 2 or 3 ml to a 100ml serve. I use distilled water if I can get it or filtered/ bottled water works too, just avoid anything with a taste (chemical or mineral). You can really taste the improvement. If you add mixers or the dreaded cola.......... I do not want to talk to you whisky is killed by carbonation.

I add at most one or two drops (literally). You are, as cliffy pointed out, actually supposed to add a little to release the flavor.

I disagree.

Most whisky has been diluted from cask strength to between 40% and 46% at the distillery using the distillery's water source.

IMO adding anything to what comes form the bottle is monkeying with the best that the distillery could produce. I love whisky but I certainly don't think I know better than the top distilleries...

Don't take my word for it though, I'm sure as hell no expert. Jim Murray is though, and he writes a bit about whisky now and then.
