Japan sends Nigeria $2.3 million

$2.3m Japanese Grant to Nigeria

It probably started with an unsolicited letter from "Department 419" in the Nigerian Government or something similar, seeking a reputable foreign company/government into whose account they could deposit funds "which the Nigerian government overpaid on a procurement contract", etc.

However, there would then be various up-front amounts and "unforeseen" taxes and fees that kept arising . . .

Actually, these were funds were for the estate of millionaire Fukuda Kichigairo, who was killed in a car crash in the mountains of Nigeria and since the Prime Minister appeared to be the only identifiable surviving relative, and was promptly notified by email of the 2.3m which was needed to process the estate in order to forward the deceased's funds, tax free of course. PM Fukuda's bank account, along with account number and anshou bango were also required and were sent along with the funds.

A return email, stated that PM Fukuda should receive all of the estate funds with in the next few months....or so...

419 scammers increasingly targeting Japanese companies

http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20081018p2a00m0na009000c.html

Many of the victims are medium and small-sized businesses, and their numbers have risen as economic conditions worsen; indicating that businesses feeling the pinch are being enticed by the fraudsters' lucrative deals.

Data from an investigative body in the Netherlands shows that worldwide, victims lost 4.3 billion dollars (about 430 billion yen) through such scams in 2007.
By country, Japan suffered the third highest losses, after the United States and Britain.
