NJR: MTV Posts 1000s of Music Videos Online

Postby FG Lurker » Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:14 pm

MTV smacks YouTube, posts almost every music video ever
ars technica, October 28, 2008
Do you sometimes find yourself wishing that there was a place you could go to just watch music videos? Back in the 80s, MTV served that purpose. These days, MTV and its sibling MTV2 are hardly channels anyone would watch in order to get a music video fix. MTV is looking to redeem itself in the music video department, however, by launching a new site Tuesday called MTV Music that opens up the company's massive video archive and puts it on the web for free.

(Full Story)

I've been poking around on the site and it looks quite good. Not too many ads and they are allowing videos to be embedded too.

A search for "japan" doesn't turn up too much yet, but they are apparently still adding a lot of content.

Nice find!..

I'm lovin' the old stuff!..

Never actually saw this video:

[mtv]32215[/mtv]

Talking Heads: This Must Be the Place
(the song I play when I'm going through the 'hate Japan' cycle)

I found one that is JR!

"Michael Anthony is currently a champion Sumo wrestler in Tokyo, Japan" :p

[mtv]252198[/mtv]

Van Halen » Hot For Teacher
"I don't feel tardy"..

Sweet!

not half bad

Postby Ol Dirty Gaijin » Wed Oct 29, 2008 10:02 pm

Pretty funny.
When you look at the top rated for the week things like
The Dead Milkmen » Punk Rock Girl

[mtv]101968[/mtv]

and Aphex Twin » Windowlicker come up.

[mtv]159236[/mtv]

When MTV did play videos, did anyone give 4 figs for these?
The director search would be nice if they fix the tags....

The site went live today -- yesterday in the US. I think word is just starting to get around about it so the "most popular" stuff is probably pretty skewed. (When I first got there clicking on "most popular" didn't bring up anything at all...)

And for good measure, a Sharp Dressed Man.

So we can try and bomb Scorpions - Wind of Change then.

Paradise City!

Part way through the band is shown boarding a BA Concorde... I always wanted to fly Concorde, I hope another supersonic passenger jet gets developed. Mmmmm, Tokyo to Vancouver in 4 to 4.5 hours? Sounds good to me!

This is one of my favorite 80's videos, Don't Go by Judas Priest because it has it seems so very spinal tap-ish with high concept to the 9s and crap production values....wind machines, check....rabbits, check.....spacemen, check...Rob Halford looking super gay, check.....Working both the song title and album title quite literally into visual elements of the video...check

Don't Go

[mtv]231415[/mtv]

A similar literal video, involving hot rocks, working out, and fire

Hot Rockin'
[mtv]231421[/mtv]

Unfortunately, they don't have the seminal "breaking the law" video where the boys break into a bank to steal their own gold record while a security guard rocks out on backwards v plywood guitar

None of the videos posted so far play in the UK "for copyright reasons". However some of you posting here are also outside the US. Are you using proxy servers or do the restrictions mainly apply to Europe?
