Sorry to stray off topic - but why are girls called co-eds in the US at university? Isn't the meaning of co-educational a school with both males and females?

/ stupid GG question #784

Also, please explain why main meals are called entrees!!

American Universities used to be solely the realm of men, as it should be. Men rule the world, and only well educated men are fit for leadership. When those schools admitted women for the first time, they were educated alongside men (thus the co- appellation), but not equal to men. They were relegated to inferior classwork (like Home Economics) without much hope of their attaining a real education (which is obviously impossible). The best they could hope for was to meet and marry a future leader.

Just kidding. Or am I?

Real answer: it's traditional, but the term is now obsolete and archaic. Male-only schools became "co-educational schools" and the new women under the new co-ed programs were just labeled co-eds. This seems to have applied even in high schools which attempted to model themselves on institutions of higher learning. They might have given this "co-ed" label to honor young women who had no hopes of ever attaining a real education.

Just kidding. Or am I?

Don't know if you trust Wikipedia, but:
Co-ed (or coed) is the shortened adjectival form of "coeducation", and the word co-ed is sometimes also used, in the United States, as a noun to refer to a female student at a coeducational college or university. This usage reflects the historical process by which it was often female pupils who were admitted to schools originally reserved for boys, and thus it was them who were identified with its becoming "coeducational".

Thanks guys - however probably what I should have added here was "Why is the word co-ed used for only female students when it is clearly an inaccurate use of a word which relates to BOTH males and females studying together?"

I guess this is what prompted my "Entree" question too.

As somebody who works with dictionaries for a living, these relatively new (and inaccurate) usages for existing words have always bothered me. If you are going to use a word, use it correctly.

But these two words have been just used incorrectly by so many people, they have been adopted into the American English lexicon.

As we have all pointed out, the schools were men only, then when they went co-ed, the new girls got stuck with the new label.

I suggest more study of lexicography, in particular the difference between a prescriptive dictionary and a descriptive dictionary. This essay I wrote may be of assistance.

And now, less talk, more pics.

More Tule Lake co-eds.

I wonder how 'dirty' that is considered in wrestling? It looks pretty unsportswomanlike to me but wrestling is a rough sport. I played what the wrestlers in my school called 'fag ball', basketball. To which I always defiantly replied 'Yes, sir!'.

But the big question is did they have a date after that?

That's an old rugger technique Behan and it looks like she's got it perfected to the top degree. It is very difficult these days to find anyone with the ability to sink home the fabled three finger knuckle-deep wedgie!

Perhaps this is one way that the Japanese education system could be reformed. "It is your patritoic duty to be able to fist the enemy should they try to attack during any one of our wonderfully unique four seasons."

I took this photo next to the TGI Fridays in Roppongi on December 31, 2006. It was very cold outside and this dude nearly got arrested. Cops gave him a hard time, but let him go after something bigger happened down the street.

"How 'dirty' "? Rather strict for the Olympics like the photo below.

Luckily, I got disqualified for choking (aikido) in Colorado Springs for the Munich '72 Olympics.

The benefits of a modern diet that's more than just subsistence.

The modern one standing looks like she could be quite hot behind those oversized shades.

I suppose it's possible.

In that case, no courtesy of a reach-around from me.
