Japanese Caught In Mumbai Violence

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Nov 27, 2008 11:27 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Bloomberg: Japan Citizen Killed, One Injured in Mumbai Attacks
One Japanese citizen was killed and another injured in grenade and gun attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai late yesterday. Japan confirmed the casualties through its consulate in the city, a foreign ministry spokeswoman, who declined to identified, said. The attacks killed as many as 80 people and injured 240, with five-star hotels among the sites targeted, Indian officials said. The citizen killed was employed by an affiliate of Marubeni Corp., Kyodo News reported, citing the Tokyo-based trading house. The person's name wasn't disclosed in the report.

CNN carries one eyewitness report which apparently involved two Japanese:

"It was absolutely terrifying," Jones told CNN, describing the moment when the doors of the elevator he was riding down to the lobby of the Trident-Oberoi, one of several luxury hotels targeted in the attacks, opened to deadly scenes of chaos. "When the doors opened, two Japanese men riding with us got out, but immediately signaled for us to go back in the lift," he said, speaking by telephone as the violence that left at least 78 people dead continued to rage. "As they got back in, a bullet hit one of the Japanese men in the back of the leg. Flesh and blood splattered everywhere. I looked up to see one of the gunmen was approaching. I tried to close the door, but the injured guy's leg was preventing it from closing." Jones said he dropped to his knees and frantically pulled the Japanese man's leg back into the elevator, watching the doors close even as the gunman was bearing down on them. "I only just kept it together enough to get the door shut," he said. Jones, 42, said he and the others in the elevator rode to the top floor -- the Japanese men getting out midway -- where hotel staff later advised them to seek refuge in the basement via a secure elevator.

NHK (Japanese text only) names the deceased as Tsuda Hisashi and says he died of wounds to his stomach after being taken to a hospital.

Biased coverage

Postby cot faulking » Thu Nov 27, 2008 12:46 pm

One j guys gets it. How many Americans and Brits? What is the complete breakdown by nationality?

This is why watching the Olympics is a waste of time. Only the own nations athletes get coverage.

Nations should get over themselves by now and think of events affecting one global village.

I really think you should go into hibernation and come back in around 200 or 300 years or so.

I stayed at the Taj last year for business; impressive place and very old.

I don't remember much in security. I thought it curious the main door to the old Taj (There are two entrances; old Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and new Taj Mahal Tower) was right in front of the busy street, facing the Gateway to India:
Image

The guards were huge dudes in Indian, Sinbad garb but I didn't see any weapons.

There's an interesting story behind the Taj..
The Taj Mahal Palace hotel resort was commissioned by Jamsetji Tata and first opened its doors to guests on December 16, 1903. Tata allegedly decided to build the luxurious hotel after he was refused entry to one of the city's grand hotels of the time, Watson's Hotel, as it was restricted to 'whites only'. The original Indian architects were Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya and D. N. Mirza, but the project was completed by an English engineer W. A. Chambers. The cost of construction was 421 million Rupees. During the World War I, the hotel was converted into a 600-bed hospital.

The side of the hotel seen from the harbor is actually its rear. The front faces away to the west. There is a widespread misconception that the architects' building plans were confused by the builder so that he built it facing away from the harbor. This is not true, as the hotel was deliberately built facing inland rather than to the harbor. This was probably a deliberate snub to the British king by Jamsedji Tata due to nationalist feelings. Some people believe that the front of the hotel had to face inland because the horse carriages, in which guests came to the hotel, could easily approach the hotel from the city. The carriages were then taken to Wellington Mews. Five decades ago, the old front was closed off, and access is since then through the harbour-side entrance... - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taj_Mahal_Palace_&_Tower

5 victims were Jews so I would guess when it comes to foreign victims Israel would be the nation with most losses
Indian citizens killed probably numbers about 200 or so
sympathies to the unfortunate Japanese victim, once again it sounds like the work of the religion of peace.

but the Hindu extremists, Christian, Shinto and Buddhists extremists are equally responsible for hostage taking and random terrorists killings *sarcasm off*

no vested interest in defending islam today Guyjean now that they've attacked your big plush hotel?

Think we'll see when the dust settles that more than 5 foreigners were killed. Jews are the most notable target, but the secondary target of Brits and Wal-mart gate crashers probably took bigger losses.

I'm waiting for the Hindu mobs to even the score.

Hearts go out to Chabad in India. baruch hashem Please implement some security...

And Jesus said, "Buraku, You must live in fear. For fear will bring you the anxiety you need to bring peace.. Amen." :p

Run for you lives!

It is written; 'a proper righteous one realizes the blanket fear of another religion manifests itself in the perception of the fringe, and in so doing, helps perpetuate the message of extremists..' At least, that's what I saw on the walls when I dropped some Muslim acid at the Taj. :p

Caught an interesting quip on another forum regarding the scrotes who are doing (did?) this.

May they boil in pig's fat for the rest of eternity.

That's got a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

"The death toll was revised down today from 195 after authorities said some bodies were counted twice, but they said it could rise again as areas of the Taj Mahal were still being searched. Among the dead were 18 foreigners, including six Americans. Nine attackers were killed. "

Japanese, Indian PMs agree to cooperate on terrorism
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20081201p2a00m0na002000c.html
Prime Minister Taro Aso agreed with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh in telephone talks on Sunday to cooperate in preventing terrorism.

In the conversation that lasted for about 20 minutes, Aso bitterly criticized the coordinated terrorist attacks in Mumbai, western India. He then underscored the need to prevent the incident from destabilizing the region, and promised to cooperate with India as much as possible.

Singh apologized for the death of a Japanese national in the incident and pledged that India will do its best to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals and companies in India.
