A Question About Return Policy

Postby faani » Wed Jan 14, 2009 1:54 pm

Hi,

I bought a Hyundai w240d LCD monitor from Tsukumo computer in Nippombashi-Osaka 4 days ago. I would like to return this monitor because I did not like it and it has some minor problems. I don't want to send it to service I just want my money back. Is it possible to return it and take my money back? What is the general return policy in Japan? I paid with my credit card, is this a problem? What should I do?

Thanks for the answers...

Yes, I am a new member. Is there any minimum rule for asking a question?

faani, you can give it a shot, but I am worried you may be out of luck. In general Japanese customers do not (as far as I know) embrace the custom of returning items because they don't like them or changed their mind. And I think store policies are usually in line with that. If the item is truly defective, then you will almost certainly be able to get a repair or a replacement. But I think getting your money back may be tricky.

Here is the cancellations/returns/exchanges page for that store (it's the store you went to, right?). Some of the reasons they list that they will not accept returns are:
  • for the customer's convenience
  • in the case of TFT displays, any issues like missing dots that the manufacturer does not consider to be a manufacturing defect

No, there is not. Prolly's first post on FG was also a question, and he got lots of nice helpful responses. I am quite sure he was not trying to imply you are any less deserving. Right prolly?

What I have found in most places that they will give you a store credit to be used for another purchase.

I would suggest that you have a japanese speaker with you if you are not confident of your own skills.

But like OM says, can't hurt to try.

thanks for the reply.

the problem is not dead pixels, I wish it was because I bought a dead pixel insurance (yeah there is an insurance for this) anyway. they told they would replace the monitor immediately if a dead pixel appears.

but the problem is a buzzing/whining noise coming from the monitor after I shut the computer. I have to switch off the monitor seperately to stop the noise. and if I do that the monitor can not power on by itself when I turn on the computer.

if I tell this problem, I think they will send the monitor to the service and I will have to wait for a long time. I don't want this, all I wanna do is return the monitor, get my money back and buy another one.

yeah I know this is messed up...

I think you have a good chance of them replacing it immediately without waiting for service, since you only bought it 4 days ago. See the replies in this thread for good experiences some people had with returning defective items. I brought a defective camera lens back to a store a few days after I bought it. They gave me a replacement lens immediately, and I didn't have to wait for a repair. I think you should bring your monitor back to the store (with receipts and original packaging) and see what happens.

Good luck!

My understanding with Tsukumo Denki is that they will replace the monitor if you have defective (dead) pixel if you had paid for the 1 month defect insurance. Therefore, I highly doubt that they will fully reimburse you for returning because you did not like it. It might be worth calling them to ask, but my feeling is that they will give you a store credit like how someone posted earlier.

Today, I went to Tsukumo and returned the monitor (with receipts and original packaging). They reimbursed the full charge both for the monitor and the insurance.

Again, thank you for your replies and for the encouragement
