"If there's a river, we'll dam it, and if there's a tree, we'll ram it - 'cause we Japanese are talkin' progress!"

All of which were an illusion based on massive unpaid overtime working hours.

This is a classic:

http://www.amazon.com/Human-Capitalism-Japanese-Enterprise-System/dp/0140169334/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239762703&sr=8-4

"Human Capitalism" - the compassionate, consensual Japanese way (snicker).

About "surplus consciousness," I'd say Japan is awash in it. Most of us FG fellas have dated a J-chick who was incredibly smart and talented but couldn't find any sort of work beyond that of an OL. And the hikikomori phenomenon, exaggerated though it may be, certainly reflects the fact there are huge numbers of Japanese who don't conform to the straitjacketed standard and are thus sidelined and ostracized.
