Angled view of Kabuto's "volcano". Looks safe.

WFMY: Child Burned At Greensboro Japanese Restaurant
A 3-year-old was burned in the face on Monday at Kabuto Restaurant on Stanley Road. The child suffered second degree burns when a cook ignited a "flaming volcano" and the liquid contents spilled onto the table. The injuries are not life threatening. A release sent by the Greensboro Fire Department says though they do not endorse the use of open flame for entertainment, it is allowed by the state fire code under certain conditions. The proprietor of Kabuto told WFMY News 2 that she and her staff are very upset about the incident. She says they have been in business for 25 years and never had something like this happen. She says they are looking into ways to make sure this never happens again.

...it seemed inevitable that someone would get burned by a stack of sliced onions and vegetable oil...

Actually, they ignite some kind of alcohol... probably cognac.

Unless you were planning on cashing in on a lawsuit, why would anyone bring a 3 year old to a teppanyaki?

Last time I went to one in the states (has anyone ever been to a teppanyaki place in Japan?... I mean, the modern "teppanyaki" dinnner and a show was invented in America by Mr. Benihana...although in my area it's all Chinese people) I could have sworn it was the same oil they used to cook the food. I think part of the flame actually comes from the onion itself...but I could be wrong.

It's actually possible to make rockets out of just about any food with fat calories.
