There's a lot of architecture in Rome to enjoy, but the whole city is so dependent on tourism, and yet the locals take tourists for granted and take advantage of them in every single way possible. It turns what could be a great city into an experience you'd rather forget.

I'm done with Rome. I love Italy but basically stay away from big cities.

I had the same feeling when I went to Amsterdam, the locals attitude seemed to be "How may I fuck you today, sir?" Ironically the only local I can remember who didn't have that attitude was a junkie who hit us up for money a few times. At least he was polite enough to give us the time of day.

Yeah but you see, at least it's only against the tourists. In Paris it's the daily life between everybody. Actually, I honestly think that whatever the tourists have to face they are a little better treated.

Just as I don't like to see foreigners being taken advantage of in Japan, I also don't like to see Japanese taken advantage of overseas. Good to know that the restaurant was shut down. But the Roman police did not go far enough. The police should have charged the people at the restaurant for criminal fraud and thrown them into jail.

Make those that commit fraud abuse against foreigners an example to deter others!

As I always tell Mrs. Tsuru whenever she is struck with amazement over the price of shit over here: Welkom in Nederland

Stuff is fucking expensive here, especially in west. Everything from houses and cars to sandwiches is expensive, taxed, and then taxed some more. We have the most expensive gasoline in the world. Not because it actually is expensive to get it, but because they can get away with it and we keep coughing up.

This is especially true for restaurant proprietors... fuckers. I shit you not, lots of people even go as far as driving to Belgium and Germany for a good night out... good food, low prices, nice atmosphere and polite staff. None of the shit you get in the Amsterdam tourist trap shithole.

A Chinese-American college roommate of mine took a ski vacation up to Whistler a few years ago and was surprised to see the restaurant staff had automatically added a 20% tip on his restaurant bill. Apparently, they assumed he was a Jap tourist or something like that....

Yeah, but there's only one Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. And it ain't in muhfuckin' Heidelberg or Brussels.

I have to say there are a lot of pricks in Whistler.

Anyway, the restaurant probably had an automatic service charge and the fact was probably announced by printing it on the very bottom of the last page of the menu in the smallest font visible to the human eye.

I've noticed TGI Friday's in Japan has an automatic 10% service charge. I asked my waitress one time if that goes to her and she wasn't even aware that they did it. Nice.

Enjoy it while you can. They are even ruining that by slowly turning every window into an art gallery.

Tourism Minister Michela Vittoria Brambilla has repeated her invitation saying that no taxpayer's money will be used, instead private companies will foot the bill. Yamada has once again refused the invitation instead saying he'd be happy to dine with her if she happened to be over in Japan on a promotional tour.

Yamada has finally agreed to have lunch with the deputy mayor of Rome when he visits Japan this week. They'll go to an Italian restaurant in Roppongi. It seems he has acceded in the hope that everyone will stop pestering him. He is quoted in the press saying that it was never his intention to disparage Italy when he made his complaint and he would like the fuss to stop dragging on. I can understand why he has repeatedly turned down free invitations to visit Rome again because it sounds like it might turn into a three-ring circus rather than a private trip he would be able to enjoy.

Japan Times: Rome official says sorry to fleeced tourist
[floatl]Image[/floatl]Deputy Rome Mayor Mauro Cutrufo offered an apology Saturday to a Japanese man who was given an outrageous bill after eating at a famous restaurant in June. Cutrufo, now in Japan to attend an event related to Italy, invited Yasuyuki Yamada, a 35-year-old business owner from Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, to an Italian restaurant in the Tokyo Midtown complex in the Roppongi district. Cutrufo gave Yamada a silver plate. Yamada accepted the gift and expressed his thanks. Yamada and his girlfriend were handed a tab for about \95,000 after eating lunch at Il Passetto in June and reported the incident to police after paying the outrageous bill.

In case you are wondering, they went to Napule for pizza.

The restaurant at the centre of the original kerfuffle, Il Passetto, has now re-opened for business after a suspension. It seems like the same owner is still in charge. One Italian newspaper has suggested a fair price for lunch for that 695 euro lunch ought to be 175 euros.
