Possible Darwin Award? Testing a concrete canoe without a life jacket when you can't swim.

The body of Ken Kitamura, 19, was found by firefighters at the bottom of the river, about an hour after the canoe capsized. He was taken to hospital, but died shortly afterwards.

Seriously, what kind of an idiot would even think of making a canoe out of concrete? And on top of that, can't swim and no life jacket?? Unfucking believable!

I thought these students were top-notch in the world with all those juku-benkyos... I am starting to question the educational standards at this OIT. Oh well, no big loss. One less moron in the Japanese genetic pool.

I think making concrete canoes is a fairly standard deal in many civil engineering schools...

Hey! Concrete floats....as long as the engineering is sound. But then again without a lifejacket, either he had a darwin candidate or had much faith in design/theory.

Concrete canoe competitions are common at uni in the USA, too.

It's an engineering challenge, but not as impossible as you'd think.
After all, most ships today are floating constructs of steel.

BUT (and it's a big BUT)

You're supposed to wear a friggin LIFE JACKET at least, and a helmet!!!!

I'd continue ragging on civvies, but it would be bad karma.

Probably bad luck and wasn't wearing a helmet either and banged his head on the sinking canoe, instant death or knocked out and drowned immediately . Keeping in mind that nobody "dies" in Japan until they're taken to a hospital and a doctor pronounces them "dead", even someone cut in half by a train isn't "dead" until taken to a hospital and examined by a doctor.

Pity the professor who will take heat because some kid thought he was immortal.

The US made warships out of concrete in WWII....

That's exactly right. A viable concrete canoe is harder to make because it's smaller than a warship. It's even pretty easy to make a smallish 35 foot yacht out of concrete.

For any floating vessel, all you have to do is make sure you displace more water than the weight of the vessel. Concrete, steel and even lead boats can be made so long as they are big enough to displace enough water to keep them afloat.

Canoes, on the other hand, typically displace very little water so they have to be made of very light materials. There's no advantage to making a concrete canoe, other than bragging rights.

I'm not sure of the Yodogawa's normal depth or exactly where the guy dropped his canoe into the water. The river is running very high right now though after all the rain we have been getting.

In the US, their parents would be suing the university. In Japan, they get made fun of by foreign devils on some irrelevant website.

FWIW, I made a boat out of cardboard when I was in the 6th grade... worked fine but we didn't make it fast enough to win the race.

My guess is they built it as part of a engineering school competition and decided to test it prior to a race. Unfortunately their understanding of civil engineer was better than their understanding of fluid dynmanics. If these are the circumstances than it is an interesting question as to whether the unviersity should be held accountable for the accident.
