Are any of these "scouts" legit?

Postby Bucky » Fri Aug 21, 2009 12:23 am

Mrs. Bucky and the 16-year-old Bucky daughter are already in Japan and wreaking havoc. I am scheduled to storm the shores of Japan on Saturday. I talking with Mrs. Bucky, she tells me that our youngster has already been "scouted" twice since arriving in Tokyo 6 days ago.

Now I admit my own bi-racial offspring is one of those hafu that is relative attractive, got the long gaijin legs and she thinks being a model sounds like something she would like to do. (Roll of eyes)

I for one am quite dubious of these scouts and whether we could legitimately expect anything worthwhile to come from being "scouted."

Does anyone have any recent experience with scouting? I have read experiences of other folks that I have found on the internet but I am looking for any receint first-hand experiences. I have seen too many stories of girls being taken advantage of.

I did read Pongi's old post about gaijin talent agencies.
I guess we could visit the agency that Pongi suggested and see if they have any recommendations. Our model-wannabe thinks it would be great summer job next summer.

Japan's two juggernaut *talent agencies*,

1--Yoshimoto Kogyo (
http://www.yoshimoto.co. jp)

2--and Johnny's Jimusho
(http://www.johnnys-net.jp), *...*

3----"Yoshimoto Kogyo" for variety-shows, comedy, theater

4-------"Johnny's Entertainment" for JPop and boy
bands like SMAP.

5--UNO for modeling

6--"Yoshitomo" and "K Factory" for singers tending toward hip hop.

7--Watanabe *Agency*, is said to be the *largest*
entertainment *agency* in * Japan*, but I think "largest" includes soapland and cabaret "entertainers"

8--- "Dentsu Casting & Entertainment", which negotiates with *talent agencies.*

Who/where are these scouts?

Scouts off the street are either trying to get into her pants or to work in a dodgey hostess bar/strip joint/soapland. None of these options is something a Dad would wish for their 16 year old virginal daughter.

Yeah, that is my thought. Supposedly one was from Abercombie. It was in Harajuku.

I have heard stories of people being "discovered" in shopping malls or someplace, but it seems pretty suspicious.

There are modelling scouts in Japan just as there are in the West: Marie Helvin was scouted in Japan when she was having coffee with her mother in a Tokyo hotel.

I don't know who they are, though. As Taro has already written, there are a number of talent agencies and a couple which handle foreigners exclusively:

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fl20090514jk.html

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fl20090705x1.html

Inagawa's company mainly supplies foreigners as actors and extras while Sumiyoshi's does the same with a bit of modelling on the side.

If your daughter wants some serious modelling work then a local modelling agency might be better. Pick up some fashion magazines and look for some agency names or else google the names of some models and you'll usually be able to find out who represents them.

I wonder why I (a 6'3" 220# bald late-30s drunken honky) was never scouted to do porn.

My first year in Japan, I worked in Harajuku in a very odd ad/PR agency. After a few months I grew friendly with the many "street fashion scouts" and more importantly photographer "assistants" who were mostly women, mostly legit, and mostly looking for cheap-as-in-free, street-fashion photo ops. That said, those street fashion scouts and photographer assistants paid even geek like me for sitting in the background of a fashion shoot from time to time to make it "international" looking.

As luck would have it, one of my freelance writing jobs shared a house (a real 20-room mansion) with the Askew Modeling Agency, so I used to pick up some weird " character" work from them as did my roommate Bbbrian (below).

Bottom Line:
Put together portfolio with a solid comp sheet and have a go at it.

There are lots (as in dozens, if not hundreds) of small casting agencies all over the place, and most of them are perfectly legit, albeit fairly limited in scope. Whenever we do casting for a photo shoot or video, we end up with comp sheets from at least a half-dozen agencies. I don't know of any that recruit on the street, though.

If you're looking for an agency, I'll give a shout-out to Lazaris. I've worked with them from both sides (working as a TV extra myself, as well as casting models for ads) and they've been good to work with.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Many of the fashion magazines (printed via Toppan Printing) use street teams of people to catch to vibe of street-fashions. When I worked in Harajuku, I was recruited off the street during my lunch break. My boss was amused by idea and I ended up being featured in "Josei Seven" several times.

Yeah, yeah, I know that the street-fashion scouts don't pay for shit  , but if you're in the neighborhood what-the-hell-go-for-it.

That's funny. My "haafu" friend got scouted by the same Abercromb gig in Harajuku the other day for the store clerk position (I know.. BFD...) and he was all stoked about it.

I guess they are allowing anyone exotic-looking.

Hey Greji, I bet one of your kids can have a aru-baito at A&F.
