Food in Yokohama

Me bitch another of those endless gynecologists meeting where the purpose seems to get people out of their countryside to see the big city lights from time to time... in Yokohama and I go to do some tourism (didn't take a lot of pictures of the nice buildings last time) and shopping in Tokyo.

Do you guy have recomandation for good restaurant ? (the big plates/small bill kind)

Uh-oh ... I'd say you're limited by a surplus of choices.

Depends on what kind of food you're after. If it's Chinese, you know where to go (hint: Yokohama Chinatown). Quality and prices vary, and the quality can even vary at the same restaurant if a top chef gets an offer of higher pay from the joint across the road. If it's loads of food at reasonable prices you're looking for, stay away from the big sparkly restaurants and head for the smaller, crowded, and usually very noisy places in the alleys. If a restaurant is empty at eatin' time, there's a reason. Other than that, just dive in and try stuff. The rest is all personal taste.

If you're more into back-alley Japanese-style izakaya type stuff, it might be fun to wander around the Noge area (a quick walk from Sakuragicho station, on the other side from Minato Mirai) after about 6 or 7 PM. Lots of interesting little dives there.

But if you want to play it safe and have lots of choice in a relatively small area, trek around Landmark Plaza and Queen's Square in Minato Mirai. Some of the fare is kinda pricey, but there's lots of good value as well.

Sorry I can't give you a specific "go here" suggestion. The variables are too vast. Perhaps someone else has a fave they can recommend.

Whatever ... Yokohama is not a bad place to eat.

I like Yokohama, but I don't seem to go very often.. Not sure about the best restaurants. I was pretty disappointed with China Town; crowded, expensive, and clean.

I like the Akarenga area but not sure about restaurants. There's Kau 'Aina Burger joint there..

Some good 'new world' wines at Tomei's Wine Bar; 'reasonable' California wines. Small place though..

If you stay away from the tourist areas, there are still a few decent places left to eat in 'hama.
For izakaya "Minatoya" in Negishi, if the owner had a good day fishing. Cheap prices and good atmosphere.
For western and if your budget runs to 10,000+ yen or so per head, "Scandia" off Osanbashi, 2nd floor, enter through the tall door around the corner, not their new pretentious cafeteria on street level.

Tokyo food at the ghetto prices.

Hit up the Chinktown, MinatoMirai (a little pricey for the ordinary engrish teachers), Yokohama Nishiguchi for the cheap izakayas, etc, Higashiguchi for the artsy fartsy...

(they choosed the Children hospital for their conference... it's lost in the woods -sorta-)
(also... i'm a magnet or are all Yokohama drivers absolutely batshit insane ? I still don't know how I managed to keep all the panels tied to my car and in their original shape)
(But... damn... that city really have nice parts, nearly Toyohashi-ish countryside-ish... for a town 30 min from akihabara that's real cool...)
