I tend to get the same "Wow, you can read Japanese and kanji...blah blah blah". It tends to stop shortly thereafter and they start telling me all their problems...for which I receive no payment...
If they continue gushing about your Japanese skills, kick them to the curb, as "Watch what happens when we secretly put natto on Iraira's rice?" is soon to follow.

i find it fairly difficult to have good japanese friends. they either treat 'foreigners' with too much deference or as children.

this is just my experience talking...
but i can relate to what sillygirl's saying.

Well, I keep the last note you sent me on the wall in the Loo! Course some of the other stuff written on the wall has the same sort of stuff...

Man this thread makes me so nervous, I have been trying to practice nihongo, but with no one to practice with it feels it is in one ear out the other.

I probably read Japanese like a 6yr old, always finding myself going to WWJDIC to figure out kanji and vocab. Makes me nervous for my upcoming trip.

I can only assume living there greatly improves vocab and nihongo skills.

[quote="prolly"]i can't tell you how many nihonjin i've had openly laugh in my face in amusement when i speak to them in japanese]

I think the internet catch phrase to post in response is..."you're doing it wrong." Eventually you'll do it well enough that they won't notice it's a dog playing - they'll be too busy listening to the piano.
