Yomiuri: Girl, 15, found dead in apparent suicide
The body of a third-year female middle school student was found dead Tuesday morning in a park in Nyuzenmachi, Toyama Prefecture, in an apparent suicide. According to police, the student's family found the 15-year-old girl hanged with a plastic cord around her neck and a metal ladder beside her. They immediately called the police. The girl's family had begun searching for her at about 4:30 a.m., after finding her missing. She was discovered dead about 15 minutes later.

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Yomiuri: Essayist Kusayanagi apparently kills self
Essayist Fumie Kusayanagi apparently hanged herself Tuesday with a rope tied to the handrail of the balcony of her apartment on the 49th floor of an apartment building in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, at about 5:50 a.m, police said. Kusayanagi, 54, was taken to a hospital after she was found by her mother, with whom she lived, and was pronounced dead there. What appeared to be a suicide note addressed to her family was found in the apartment. According to the police, Kusayanagi had suffered from a chronic illness. She had an operation in May 2007, and she visited a hospital regularly for treatment. Kusayanagi was a daughter of the late Daizo Kusayanagi, a noted critic. She worked as a TV critic and a member of the government's Tourism Policy Council.

The results are, prima facie, impressive: there is a strong correlation between suicide rates and national average IQ in most of the countries surveyed. For instance, Jamaica, with a low average IQ of 72, has suicide rates of 0.5 for men and 0.2 for women (all suicide figures are per 100,000 person-years). Albania, with an average IQ of 90, has low suicide rates of 2.9 and 1.7. Germany by contrast, with its average IQ of 102, has suicide rates of 21.8 and 8.3]

Maybe the higher average IQs in those countries are a result of the suicides - like "Norm's Buffalo Theory" for beer and brain cells. ;)

But isn't the reality that intelligence breeds pride at the expense humility. It is a wonderful thing to be in the company of an intelligent person who is also humble, perhaps because it seems so rare.

Consider this passage: "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.". In thousands of years, the proud would still rather kill themselves than suffer humility.

I'm glad you raised this today <*puts razor blade back in the draw*>

Mainichi: 6 lives saved by anti-suicide patrols along coast of Fukui Prefecture
Members of a local non-profit organization (NPO) conducting anti-suicide patrols along the coast of Sakai, Fukui Prefecture, saved six people from taking their own lives in November. Perhaps reflecting the current state of society, four of the would-be suicides were recently laid off temporary workers. The anti-suicide patrols, which operate along the scenic cliff line of Tojinbo, were started by Yukio Shige, head of the NPO "Kokoro ni hibiku bunshu/henshukyoku." "In October," Shige says, "there were no would-be suicides by temporary workers here. I hope that we will soon have a society where temporary workers can find secure jobs."

Some 25 people commit suicide every year along the sharp Tojinbo cliffs that extend along the coast from Ishikawa Prefecture. It was along these cliffs that Shige spotted one young man, 22, at the precipice while on his regular patrol at 4 p.m. on Nov. 5. Shige approached the man from behind and, tapping him on the shoulder, said "Let's go home." Once Shige had taken the young man back to his local office and calmed him down, the would-be suicide explained his circumstances. The young man, originally from Iwate Prefecture, had been employed at a Tokyo area mobile phone vendor through a personnel agency. In October, the man was told he was "no longer required," and was also expelled from the company dormitory he had been living in. With no relatives to turn to for help, the man went from place to place, finally arriving at Tojinbo. Shige spoke to the man in a soft tone, saying, "It must have been a very painful time for you. But there's no pain that can't be healed." Shige then gave the man information for a private shelter in Osaka's Kita-ku, and put him on an express bus.

Another incident occurred on Nov. 27 at about 5 p.m., when a 27-year-old native of Miyagi Prefecture came weeping into Shige's office close to the Tojinbo cliffs and said, "Please, could you listen to me?" The man had been employed through a personnel agency at a Mie Prefecture construction firm while he studied to become a local civil servant. However, business did not go well for the firm and, at the beginning of November, the man's contract was terminated. The young Miyagi man went from place to place by bicycle, until he got to Tojinbo. When he arrived, he had only 50 yen in his pocket. The young man happily ate some mochi (rice cake) that Shige had offered him, while Shige directed him to a volunteer facility in Saitama Prefecture. "The four would-be suicides were all in the prime of life," Shige said. He called for government support, saying, "To give these people who have lost their way new possibilities, the government should quickly establish temporary shelters to help."

Yomiuri: Man found dead at Defense Ministry
A man was found dead Monday morning in a suspected suicide at the Defense Ministry in Ichigaya, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. The 24-year-old administrative official of the Air Staff Office was found by a staff member bleeding on the ground in front of the Defense Ministry's Block A building at about 9:55 a.m. He was later confirmed dead by ministry officials. The Self-Defense Force's military police were investigating the incident, suspecting the official jumped from the 19-story building. According to the ministry, the official joined the ministry just last Wednesday and was in charge of personnel affairs. He had no connection to matters concerning North Korea's missile launch. The main departments of the Defense Ministry, including the defense minister's office and the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense staff offices are located inside the office building.

The sheer boredom of kanji study could easily have driven him to suicide. ;)

Congratulations Japan, you have hit another all-time low (in Japanese)...

The total reported suicide tally for Japan from January to the end of August was 22,362. At this pace, it is projected to beat the 2003 record of 24,427

I have a feeling that Jukai is going to be a popular destination for this autumn.

Alarmed by a rise in people jumping to their deaths in front of trains, some Japanese railway operators are installing special blue lights above station platforms they hope will have a soothing effect and reduce suicides.

Yep! Seeing that blue light there turns me right off the idea of suicide....I guess painting the platforms yellow like they did a few years ago to achieve the same effect didn't work, huh?
They need to point up and down the platform more if they want to stop suicide...

I was wondering wtf why are there so many "accident" reports on the train information screens.

Holy shit. :o

Are many of the "accidents" human related? Or are some actual legitimate reasons (ex. Fire, Derailment, hit a kitten.)

I wish they opt to do that shit elsewhere like at Aokigahara instead of choosing the rushiest of the rush hour to jump in front of the oncoming train and affecting the entire train grid.

Similar story on the same day from AP:

"There's a notion in the West that Japanese people commit suicide because of some noble ideal depicted in literature or art," said Kurihara's mayor, Isamu Sato. "But it's not true. People are driven to suicide because they are struggling in their daily lives."

Or, they could bring back the samurai and the old rule that they could lop people's heads off to test the sharpness of their swords. Anyone feeling down could volunteer themselves to maintaining Japan's unique samurai culture and literally put their head on the chopping block.
They could hold the sword-testing in front of Hachiko and everyone could take footage of the tests on their keitai.
I saw a public execution in Saudi Arabia in the early 1990s and the punters loved it. A display of public bloodthirstiness would probably lift lots of spirits and help out the victims by giving them what they want.

I'm definitely being premature posting this story here but, if it does turn out to be self-inflicted then it's a novel method:

Mainichi: Student found dead in Aichi apartment with rubbish bag over head
A female university student was found dead in her apartment here on Sunday, police said. Police identified the woman as Kanako Ono, 20, a third-year student at Nagoya University of Arts and Sciences. Ono was found lying on her back with her legs under a low table, and a plastic garbage bag over her head. There were no visible wounds on her body, and police are set to conduct an autopsy to determine her exact cause of death. Ono lived by herself. On Sunday she was absent from a university seminar, prompting the university to call her mother, who lives in another prefecture. The mother asked the apartment caretaker to check on her, which led to the discovery of her body. The door of the home was not locked when the caretaker entered, police said.
