1. Sushi.
The sushi in my home country just don't cut it! We don't have chu-toro, tuna mayo or aburi-samon. The rice seems "wrong", the soy-sauce is weird, and you can barrelly taste the hotate. To top it, our sushi is more than twice as expensive as the sushi in Japan...

2. Nashigoren
This is not a japanese dish, but I ate it for lunch about 20 times in the 4 months i spent in Japan. It was just so damn tasty and fulfilling!

3. Soup Curry
I have only eaten soup curry twice, but i really love it. I know that I won't eat it very often, even when I return to Japan, but I like having the possibility! It's really tasty, easy to find, and not that expensive!

I also love sukiyaki, okonomiyaki and yakiniku, but I don't really miss these courses(yet).

[quote="Adhesive"]Well, I've recently moved about an hour away from civilization, so I no longer have instant access to all of my favorite Japanese goodies. Naturally, I had to bump this thread. Reading over everyone's entries has put me into a near fit of hysteria. I would KILL for a hot bowl of tonkotsu ramen right now.

Just a heads-up for the Yebisu drinkers, I think they have been trying to make a push back into the US market for the last year or two, as they started stocking it a lot in all the various Japanese markets here in the SF Bay area. I'm going to assume you can find it in all Mitsuwa markets across the country. I know we've got quite a few alcoholics on here, so it might be worth the 200+ mile drive for some of you. ]

Yebisu has been around for a while. I know because I used to work at a Japanese supermarket down in SoCal back in college and we had it regularly. Although it used to be ridiculously expensive (still is) and never really was popular.

I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but when are we going to get some Premium Malts here in the US? The last time I was living here, the only truly imported beer from Japan was Sapporo, but now they're all from Molson or Budweiser (with the exception of Yebisu).

And there are some "decent" ramen joints here in the Bay Area...

I second Tsuru's comment about Shochu. Although there are the common bottles here and there, it's really hard to find a decent selection.

What do I miss the most? A freakin' decent plate/bowl of soba....

Not a huge fan of Premium Malts but not a hater either. Yebisu is owned by Sapporo so I guess that explains its presence in the US market. I sure like being able to get whatever Japanese beer I like at the 24 hour supermarket 2 mins from my house.

Racing around to come up behind you again

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
