Capsule hotels offer close quarters in Osaka, Japan
Dallas Morning News, January 3, 2010
[floatr]Image[/floatr]OSAKA, Japan -- I checked myself into the hotel on one of Osaka's typically muggy late-summer afternoons. I went to my room, which contained the standard bed, television and clock radio, and when it was time to pull the blinds, I was careful not to hit my head on the 3-foot-high ceiling.

I had already done that once.

So this wasn't your average hotel room. The Sunplay Inn Nagahori is a capsule hotel, a must-stay for the foreign visitor to Japan who wants to know the true meaning of the term "close quarters."

The human-size safe-deposit boxes illustrate the ingenuity of a country that is about the size of California, yet has a population roughly half that of the entire United States.

[...]

The hotel, of course, did have bathrooms, though some were of the traditional Japanese style: a 2-foot-long elliptical bowl in the floor and no toilet seat to speak of, or sit on.

[...]

In Japan, bathing is a ritual, a way of cleaning one's mind as well as body after a busy day. And for the Japanese, the bath offers a rare moment of relative privacy.

The bathing room was similar in appearance to an indoor public pool, only smaller and without screaming kids. To the left was a series of stations, each of which had a shower sprayer for washing yourself before the bath. To the right was a rectangular tub, not much larger than a standard apartment complex pool.

As a gaijin, or foreigner, I wasn't used to Japanese public bathing. But despite some trepidation, I pressed on, determined to get some of the serenity that the bath was supposed to offer.

"Hot" would be a mild way of describing the water temperature, and the serenity was a bit difficult to achieve. I stuck with it for a few minutes before making my way to the exit. The two Japanese businessmen in the bathtub were amused by my attempt to join their cultural experience.

Back at my capsule, I tried out the TV built into the ceiling of the unit and happened upon a poorly dubbed American movie. Even in one of the most Japanese forms of accommodation, where culture shock hits you the moment you walk in the door, a hint of America could be found.

Ugh, it looks like an array of microwave ovens. The Japanese must be masochists to do this to themselves. We hear about empty danchi and millions of abandoned houses and condos; there's got to be a more humane way to live.

Soylent Green is Japanese!
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

More like the pet shop displays. Do they come with the feeders?

Hey, that's a great idea. Maybe we could put bars across these cages, equip them with feeders and then create a homeless zoo where members of the public could come and leer at those inside. You could pay a special price to be able to pet a cute homeless and even adopt them, if you like. But if no one claims them within seven days, they get euthanized. It'd be the biggest thing since Nezumiland.

What an unusual and quirky thing! Can a gaijin stay in a capsule hotel? Any rules?

Was a gaijin who wrote that article.....after staying at a capsule hotel.

No rules beyond what you'd find at a normal hotel AFAIK.

I think Gaijin are allowed but female customers are not allowed.

Off topic, but I found an interesting hotel in Osaka and Kyoto, with the image of first class airplane but claim to be as cheap as capsule hotel. (Yen 4500~) Website: http://first-cabin.jp/en/

And female guests are allowed.

No disrespects intended TB, but why would a guy even want to go to any hotel without a woman?

No disrespect intended Greji :herring:
I am not even sure how many of you big & tall gaijin can squeeze in there alone.

I have always wanted to try capsule hotel, too bad they don't allow. Since there are so many career women nowadays, they should consider opening up a women's section.

It's a waste of time. I've spent my adult entire life thinking almost entirely about precisely this question and it's gotten me nothing but trouble....

There are capsule hotels with floors set aside for women now:

Wow! Thanks a lot FGL. I gave up hope about this and didn't bother to search on since quite long ago. I am glad I made that complaint in my previous post and I foresee myself missing the last train in the near future.

The one in Asakusa has had a women's floor for around 15 years already.

Looked like my husband was not very encouraging with my idea then. I was being told no capsule hotel accept women. And I totally believe so, after seeing a few of the no women welcome sign in the website. I am outdated, still live in the disco era.
