A speedboat that can do 40 knots, deliberately being parked in front of a much larger vessel, and they're claiming they were suddenly rammed.

Yeah, I buy that. They played chicken with a freight train and got clipped.

The video does not show the exact contact but I am sure that is what happened. Even if the whale boat tried to stop, it could not do anything and the result is the same.

The high-tech stealth boat Ady Gil was cut in half and sunk by a Japanese security vessel in Antarctic waters today, dramatically upping the stakes in the annual struggle between whalers and protesters.

What the fuck is this way of writing which is bluntly drawing close to the SS's fraud? Damn uncivilized aussies. I wholeheartedly want to cut in half all Aussie's bodies living in Japan and make it sink into Tokyo bay.

This video is different than the one with the article.. It does look like they were rammed; It didn't appear they were traveling very fast, or at all.. (edit - on second viewing, it looks like they sped up at the last moment. Was it to turn away? Avoid collision? Or, to ensure it was hit? I don't know. But I still stand by my below comments.)

This happening, along with the video, is probably exactly what SS wanted; it's great PR, ultimately bringing in millions more from supporters.. And it makes Japan look like bullies. The SS won. :)

I agree. Enormous PR value for the SS...overseas.
This video certainly seems to make the Japanese look like bullies, but the Japanese couldn't give a f**k what the rest of the world thinks when it comes to whaling. They already know the rest of the world decries the practice (except Norwegians) and still flip the bird at everyone.

Because the general population does not eat whale and these whaling are done for scientific researches. Oh, been in Japan long enough that I feel like I have been brainwashed.

And there are enough Japanese people who eat whale to support traveling to Antarctica to kill them?! They should be harpooning white elephants while they're at it. :p

Based on that video, it looks much more like the SS rammed the Shonan Maru. They're certainly the more maneuverable vessel (although being piloted by the least competent sailors).

That video's not really long enough to tell what happened.

eddie, I've had whale steak and thought it was pretty good. Certainly better than ikura or saba sashimi.

Looks like the Maru swerved towards them in this clip:

But it didn't look like the Gil was going in reverse either..

Basically, if all else fails, when two boats are at risk of colliding, the boat that has the other on its starboard must keep out of the way.

Still, it reminds me of what I learned long ago when first given the chance to take the helm of a yacht...

Meanwhile..

Bob Barker Donates $5 Million to Help Save Whales
http://www.kget.com/entertainment/entertainmenttonight/story/Bob-Barker-Donates-5-Million-to-Help-Save-Whales/RyJxtVGVA0ORg174hTVk2g.cspx
.. Barker donated the funds to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which used the donation partly to buy a new ship called the Bob Barker, which saw action Tuesday in the Antarctic when it made contact with Japanese whaling vessels.

Barker's gift also funded a new helicopter for the organization.

It looks to me like they swerved to ram them. You can see the ship roll as they turn right to hit them, then roll back as they turn away after the ramming..

Although, I seem to remember seeing video of SS ramming ships before also, so...

Yep, that showed pretty clearly that the Maru was intent on ramming.

And look at this video from the Shonan Maru No. 2 it appears to me that the Ady Gil does accelerate as her wake increases from a near dead-stop, but at the same time, it appears that the Shonan Maru No. 2 turns to starboard. Man, if you are piloting the Ady Gil stay the fuck out of the way of a big steel ship!

I remember when I was in Nara(2008'), as a tourist. I only knew the very basics of Japanese, so I was glad when i stumbled upon an English-speaking Japanese, when I couldn't find out where to go.

Him: Where are you from?
Me: Norway!
Him: Ah, our country likes you! You also kill whale!! *big smile*

It's hard to see, but I don't really see anything that looks like composite material in that pic...I assumed the boat was carbon-fiber.

I gotta say, I didn't exactly feel sorry for them. Don't start nothing won't be nothing.

The yellowy stuff is probably the sandwich filler material, similar to that expanding foam stuff. CF is hard to spot under a black coat of paint.
