LDP's Hiranuma Questions Renho's Japanese Credentials

Kyodo: Ex-minister Hiranuma says lawmaker Ren Ho is 'not originally Japanese'
Former trade minister Takeo Hiranuma on Sunday criticized remarks made by House of Councillors member Renho in November in trying to slash budget allocations for the supercomputer development by pointing to the fact that the politician, who goes by a single name, is a naturalized Japanese. "I don't want to say this, but she is not originally Japanese," said the former Liberal Democratic Party member during a speech before his supporters in Okayama City. "She was naturalized, became a Diet member, and said something like that," the independent House of Representatives member continued. Hiranuma was referring to the high-profile remarks made by the ruling Democratic Party of Japan member, who asked during a debate with bureaucrats, "Why must (Japan) aim to (develop) the world's No. 1 (supercomputer)? What's wrong with being the world's No. 2?" The remarks have been broadcast repeatedly on TV as a symbolic image of the DPJ-led government's efforts to cut wasteful spending. The remarks were "not appropriate for a politician," Hiranuma said, adding that Japan, as a country aiming to be a science technology power, "must have the budget for (developing) the world's No. 1 (supercomputer)." He later told reporters he did not intend to say anything discriminatory and what he meant was that politicians should not engage in "sensational politics that ring the bell with TV broadcasters." According to Renho's website, she was born in 1967 as the child of a Taiwanese father and a Japanese mother, and switched her citizenship from Taiwanese to Japanese in 1985.

If anything that makes her more qualified to make better decisions because doesn't have some nationalist monkey on her back telling her to make bad budget decisions just out of the desire to be No.1.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

I don't know if I'd go as far as Jack and say the Japanese have the most beautiful women in the world, but I'm pretty certain their jukujo would be way up there.

I'm implying that jukujo span a very wide scale (sort of like the difference between aging like fruit or wine), and that she's on the very high side of the scale. I'd hit it like the fist of an angry god.

I'm astounded that everyone has jumped on Renho (figuratively, guys!;) ) rather than the typically exclusionist, nazi-reminiscent "she's not pure blooded so she doesn't count" attitude displayed by Hiranuma. Naturalization isn't good enough, apparently.

This speaks volumes to those who might believe that if they acquire Japanese citizenship they will be treated as equals (listening, Debito?). Nope. If you weren't born in the tribe as a child of the tribe there will always be cases in which you will be excluded, no matter how "qualified" you might be.

On the other hand, I do think cutting funding for the supercomputer was a bad idea and sets a bad precedent.

Oh yeah ... and Renho is hot.

Am I the only person who finds it funny that him saying "I don't want to say this, but..." is just a hilariously Japanese way of saying "I'm about to say something REALLY racist, but..."

It's like pretexting it this way somehow makes it acceptable.

In America, we tend to say things like "Now, I'm not a racist, but..."

(but people with common sense keep their mouth shut)

Sorry, Jack, but your observation of J-Women is purely subjective, so if you would restate your comments and say "in my opinion" but what you're saying is based on an emotional fond you have for Japanese women. But to say it is "factual" is utter non-sense!

Not everyone thinks Japanese women or Asian women are hot, just depends on who you talk to.

Can't someone like Takechanpoo post on this thread with a comprehensive 2ch-approved list of all Diet members with naturalized backgrounds as well as half-castes? I am sure there are a few Zainichi Koreans in the ranks including the LDP. Oh, and while he's at it, better include the list of burakumin like Nonaka - one theory posits that they are the descendants of Koreans anyways.

Let's racebaiting!

Oh, and back to the more important topic at hand ... yeah, Renho is hot. I'd definitely do her!!

Now, are they open zainchi, or closet zainichi? Do they even speak Korean?

Of course, the Japanese have this obsessive self-image of themselves being some sort of pure, unique race when they're really just a mish-mash of random mongoloids (Koreans) and indigenous people... on the genetic level.

Of course, you could argue that it's really just the culture and the place of birth that matters to them, especially regarding full-blooded Japanese born/raised elsewhere. Otherwise they wouldn't have terms like kikokushijo and nisei.

You're basically screwed if you're naturalize (from anywhere), ethnically korean, chinese, ainu, bunrakumin, or a half.

Phew! I was worried for a moment there that you may not enjoy the pleasures of a glorious jukujo, of which this country has a bountiful supply!

Jack wrote:Japan does.

I can see where you're coming from and (desperately) want to agree, but have seen too many ornery types to be able to make such a blanket observation. For example, my ex-wife was an absolute bushpig....

Thanks Yokohammer for bringing the thread back to a serious discussion after I had caused it to digress into evil sexism.
I guess on my part that the race issue never really bothers me any more because I have been here so long that I know no matter what I do, I will never be able to overcome the racialism (as opposed to racism) of the Japanese. The Japanese will change when/if they want to or, more likely, have to, and people like Deadbeato will never have any effect other than alienating or infuriating the neo-nationalists. TIJ!
But, I agree with you on the supercomputer.
Finally, this country should be run by Hos.

"What's he say?"
"He said the Councillor is near!"

The mental disconnect on this guy is amazing. To dismiss her evaluation of a supercomputer project (hell, I disagree with her, too) because she's racially impure, and then follow it with "[The remarks were] not appropriate for a politician," and "[politicians should not engage in] sensational politics that ring the bell with TV broadcasters." What an eejit.

He's struggling to come up with anything.
Then again - if you look at a large part of the current LDP, how many have entered through blood connections ?

I think they consider the blood connection thing a big thing. Bigger than common sense anyhow.

Jeez, not this again, one of the reasons they overthrew the bakufu was because of incompetent leaders who were only getting the job because of their blood line. I say the Japanese diet should kick out anyone who had a father or grandfather as a politician and start fresh.

We are talking about a guy who is the adopted son of a war criminal. Expect to hear more of him in the future and he would seem to be the main assenter in the revisionist 'The Truth of Nanking' due out wheneven the fuck. I seem to remember a couple of years ago he made a splash when he fretted about Princess Aiko marrying a Purple Eyed Monster (edit -a blue-eyed foreigner) so he does seem to have a bee in his bonnet about foreigners.

He has a long essay in Engrish on his site where he talks about his experiences on Aug. 15, 1945. The point of his essay? His grandfather was a victim of victor's justice.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Read it ... and am still unsure as to what he's actually trying to say. Just eulogizing the the strength of character and heroism of his family?

So poor old Kiichiro is demonized by the Japanese right wing and then tried as an A-class war criminal at the Tokyo Tribunals. The sucker just can't win, but what's the message? I can't help but feel that it's just "look at how much the righteously determined people of my family have suffered!"
