McDonalds Blunders Over Doraemon Chinese New Year Campaign In Singapore

Straits Times: Pig toy is back on the menu
BOWING to demands from the public, fast-food giant McDonald's has decided to add a pig toy to its latest promotion after leaving it out initially. The figure was to have been part of a 12-character Doraemon set depicting the animals of the Chinese zodiac calendar, but the chain replaced it with a Cupid toy when the promotion began a month ago. It said at the time that it had done so in order 'to be sensitive to the Muslim customers'. But the move was derided by many Singaporeans, including Muslims, who felt it to be unnecessary. Chinese Singaporeans complained that the pig is part of the zodiac, and that leaving it out makes little sense. Many said they had wanted to buy the whole collection, but had decided against it, as the set would not be complete without the porcine toy.

The pig now gets a special mention on the website:

The kind of muslims that would be offended by Doraemon in pig suit would also be offended by the whole concept of the Chinese Zodiac so there really was no reason for Mickey D's to bother.

Maybe to appease them they should design a Doraemon dressed as Mohammed. Or maybe not.

Jesus. It's not like they had the Terrorist Doraemon with pipe bombs strapped to its body, though that would have been more appropriate IMO. These muslims get angry over just about everything.

It doesn't appear that muslims got upset about anything in this case which is why people are complaining that McDonalds was being oversensitive.

Despite MuckDonald's warm, fuzzy sensitivity toward the children of Allah, I notice it doesn't extend to taking hamburgers off the menu....(I know, I know, they're beef....or supposed to be....but I couldn't resist taking a shot at them).

But, that's the problem. Nobody knows where the line is anymore. it seems like everytime we change something to stay on the good side of the "P.C. line", these fuckers move the line. I wouldn't be suprised if this same situation would be deemed offensive in ten years.

I am guessing as it does not work that way in "that neighbouring country of Singapore" where they even banned the movie Babe last time. And so McDonalds was probably influenced by that and exercise the same sensitivity next door.

That's the real problem.
