Vancouver Olympics Trash Talk Time

Ok, in the mood for nationalistic sports trash talk regarding the Olympics.

Who's in line behind Greji for a go at Johnnie Weir?

Japan not doing particularly well thus far (zilch fuck-all in the 5000 meter speed skating and normal hill jump). Although the commentators made a huge fuss over the fact that there were four Japanese dancers in the opening ceremony.

Any guesses as to how many golds/silver/bronze medals?

I'll admit to being a bit of a Mao Asada fan though ... she skate good. I'll be rooting for here in the figure (expecting a lewd "root" based comment from SDH here :) ).

I go with about 1 gold and maybe a coupe silvers but not much more. As far as the events today, ski jumping was fixed after Nagano so that only European can win by limiting the length of the skis based on the size of the competitor. The 5000 meter speed skating is not a specialty of Japanese skaters who tend to be sprinters.

Maybe a couple gold, but I'm not expecting them to have much to wank about this time.

But isn't that rule designed to give competitors an even chance rather than a lopsided advantage?

Okay in than case, shouldn't all basketball players over 190 cm be forced to carry 5 kg weighs attached to there ankles because they have a height advantage.

The rules were changed simply because Europeans got pissed about losing and since they dominate the winter games in terms of the number of countries they represent they can changes the rules to their advantage. This is the main reason for so long the Russian and Czechs could send their 'amateur' hockey players to the Olympics while Canada and the USA had to send real amateurs.

Was at the gym fighting with the stationary bicycle this morning. The women's mogels was on, and watching what looks like pure torture on the knees served to inspire me to greater perspiration and more exercise than usual, until NHK had to break out with the super-cutsey FAXes from fans encouraging various J-athletes to...whatever. Ended up watching Attack 25 waiting for the Super Million Hair commercial, mood to exercise ruined by alleged FAXes from alleged fans.

I saw a few minutes of it around noon, right when that Japanese skier massively screwed up a flip of some sort, landed in a heap, and proceeded to slide most of the rest of the way down. I don't think she won. :p

Good thing that she didn't win. That would have cut into her Roppongi'ing time...

It's really a hoot to mogul her on a table top at one of the local pubs.

Actually, Tae was in position for another medal when she crashed and burned on the second jump. I was kinda rooting for her as a fellow Roppongi vet and was sorry to see her go in on the jump. She did get up and finish the run.

It would have been nice to see her score since the media had written her off and had self-proclaimed Uemura the sure medalist. As you now know, Uemura, in holding with her consecutive Olympic tradition, failed to make the podium again.

Weir on threats: 'I didn't want to get hurt'
U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir says he received threats from anti-fur activists that made him fear for his safety, causing him to scrub any plans to stay at a hotel while in Vancouver for the Olympics.

"I felt very threatened," he said Saturday. "I'm not allowed to say how everything got through, but my agent got letters and faxes and e-mails. I got letters at the ice rink, somebody found my phone number.

Johnny Weir, who sealed his Vancouver spot with a third-place finish at nationals, said he was threatened by anti-fur activists.

"All these crazy fur people. Security-wise, to stay in a hotel would be very difficult. There have been threats against me. I didn't want to get hurt."

Weir is sharing a suite with U.S. ice dancer Tanith Belbin in the Olympic village. The longtime friends have their own bedrooms and bathrooms.

Tanith is the one in red and odds are good that she and Johnny are "just friends"

Anyone remember the 2002 World Cup, when the S. Korean team did some weird skating-style celebration after scoring a goal on the US team? It was in retaliation for a Winter Olympic controversy that nobody noticed but the Koreans: Nisei-American Apollo Ono took gold in the 1500m speed skating after the S. Korean skater was DQ'ed for illegal blocking. The general reaction from the rest of the world?

Well, yesterday in the 1500m, S. Korea was about to sweep the event going into the final turn, when two of their skaters collided and wiped out. The skater who moved up from 4th to 2nd? Apollo Ono.

Incidentally, this puts Ono in a tie for most Winter Olympic medals, with three more events to go.

Not Aussies! It was our guy who was a distant sixth, watched everybody in front of him fall over and then swept across the finish line with a huge, shit-eating grin to claim Australia's first-ever Winter Olympic gold medal. It was hilarious! And he became a national hero, getting his image on stamps and the like.

Well remembered. I got a glimpse of a replay of that on J-TV the other night and it is still too cool. I always thought he looked embarssed when he suddenly realized he just came in first and won the gold with all the other skaters lying around like duck pins. Hey, what does it matter? He who crosses the line first wins.....

We (Australia, I mean) grabbed a silver in the freestyle skiing!
Thanks to Dale Begg-Smith, who also won the gold in the men's mogul at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
