Check the network setting (cable unplugged ? antenna gone banana ?)

Check the DNS entries...

Reboot...

Take a break....

Next time be even more vague with your question.

Usually... nowhere if you're doing DHCP... or in the network configuration panels... do you have nslookup available ?

Protocol for Linux - in case of any errors with network or performance, "sudo rm -rf" should clear up any issues.

For Windows, the usual ALT-F4 should get rid of your connectivity issues immediately. If not, then reboot, insert your Windows CD and when it asks, delete the partition that is causing the issue, this will solve all your problems.

For Mac - I don't know. I don't touch those things with a 10 foot pole.

I was trying to save him from having to troubleshoot any network profile or driver issues. *Uninstall driver > reboot > login > system auto reinstalls driver > :) Works for me 99% of the time.

desktop refers to my old desktop pc i fired up to see if it was a problem with my building's connection.

as for my XP netbook, i tried running the internet connection wizard it said i cant run it until i install the appropriate hardware and drivers.... so something has really gone wrong. (i was on line yesterday morning and lost the connection around lunch)

Definitely a driver issue. Uninstall any driver for the network device from 'Device Manager', then reboot. After reboot, log back in and it should automatically reinstall the correct driver. If not, go back to the Device Manager and select 'scan for devices'. It should pick up and install the correct driver.. I hope this helps.

according to this, i must delete everything that comes up with an exclamation mark ( which for my pc is everything under network adapter). Unfortunately windows says i cant delete them because it may need them. It doesn't mention anything about permission.....

any ideas on the next step, anyone?

Not to sound snarky or anything, but how are you able to load/run/deal with Linux but unable to find device manager?

Your best bet may be to find out which network adaptor you have, then visit the manufacturers website and download their drivers. Either that or where the exclamation mark is on the network adaptors, you doubleclick and try to update the driver from either CD or C:/

Hemmm.... in the past years Linux have become much more easy to install than windows... XP/ 7 need a machine that is on the 'sweet spot' technically wyse, means hardware that is not too old to be unsupported neither too recent to have buggier than hell drivers. While at the same time requiring cutting edge components to run smoothly... very frustrating...

For the modem, if it's a software winmodem with linux it won't work...
