New BS channels

Postby canman » Mon Jun 07, 2010 12:28 pm

Has anyone else noticed that there are a number of new BS channels on tv now. I'm not sure if they are PPV or what, but I was just clicking through and came upon them. Anybody have an info on these?

More bullshit on JTV? I'm shocked! :p

Lurker, I am not holding out hope for anything good, but there is always the small chance they might put something decent on.

Nah, it's just the BS thing always struck my juvenile funny bone.

Sorry I missed that one completely. I guess you've been in Japan too long when a BS joke goes right over your head, as you think it is natural to talk about TV stations as BS.

All BS'ing aside, I don't think there are any new channels. Here is the official list of channels:
http://www.dpa.or.jp/program/index02.html

and none of them are new. BS11 (owned by Bic Camera) and BS12 (which mostly shows QVC shopping all day) started up in 2007 or 2008 if I recall, but there are no changes since then.

I think a few more changes are happening next year. Among others, NHK is revamping all their satellite channels. In conjunction with the cessation of analog satellite, they are converting BS1 and BS2 to Hi-Vision, and BS-h (the existing hi-vision channel) will go off the air.

What new channels do you think you saw? Is it possible you tuned in during a temporary free preview of Wowow or Star Channel?

That's a possibility. They sometimes run campaigns during which everything is unscrambled.

well I just checked out the channels again and they are BS 291-298, the first two are NHK channels, but there is also a TBS channel and a Nippon TV channel and TV Tokyo. So it might be as you said getting ready for some big changes next year. I can't watch anything on them, but the channel is there.
