Late in the game Dempsey stepped on the ball and went face first into the turf.

Japan vs Netherlands.

0:0 after the first half, and the studio commentators are making almost exactly the same comments as they did approximately 40 minutes before Australia kicked some serious butt in the 2006 World Cup: "This is exactly as planned, you can see that the Netherlands team are getting worried. They're feeling the pressure!"

We'll see ... if I can stay awake for the second half ...

Gotta admit, Japan's defense is better than it has been in the past.

Phew, that was close. Not a good game, but adequate for this phase of the tournament... I think v Marwijk is deliberately doing this to make sure we don't peak too early and run out of steam in the 1/4 finals like a few years ago. When we get to the knockout phase Robben will be sent in and the afterburner will be kicking in, you will see 8)

If the best you can manage against Japan is 1-0 there isn't a lot of hope against a real team. :p

True. But that referee was a fuggin' idiot. He disallowed the third US goal without just cause. That referee was a sad joke. His first World Cup...that sap needs to be booted from the tournament for a crappy job.

Indeed. Despite the loss for Japan, it was not an humiliating defeat, by any standard.

The Netherlands = safe
Cameroon = out

Due to goal difference, Japan only needs a draw against Denmark in the last round. Things are looking quite good for Japan now. Denmark showed us that they can't both attack and defend at the same time(at least not very well). Cameroon was very unlucky to only score one goal today. Not only that, but Denmarks super-talent Simon Kjær was booked again, and will miss the last round.

If Japan can keep defending as good as the have done so far, and sneaks in an early goal, I believe the job is done ;)

Japan is showing some unprecedented mettle this time around. It certainly makes things more interesting than if they were simply pounded into the turf by stronger teams.

I'm sure the Aussie FG contingent has also noticed that the Australia vs Ghana game was a 1:1 tie.

Not a lot of excitement thus far ...

It's great to see Japan do so well and I, for one, will be rooting for them to get through to the next round. (Actually, if used in the context of the Aussie parlance, I'd root for anyone.)

The Soceroos were much better than they were against Germany, so here's hoping they can knock off the war criminals from Serbia and join Japan in the group of 16.

A loss is a loss but you're right. It could have been a lot worse like a 5-0 devastation. Okazaki's missed goal at the end could have tied the game and he had all the opportunity to change the outcome of the game. That was a perfect example why Japan has no chance in the world cup.

The French World Cup squad refused to train today widening the rift between the players and the coach. If they ever needed a Zidane it is now.

The Florida Marlins had a fan giveaway on Saturday, minivuvuzellas, which may have caused miscommunication between the home plate umpire and the Marlins manager. Why would any team want to give these things away! I read that baseball is now thinking of banning them from all stadiums. Wimbledon has already banned them from the grounds.
Last nights New Zealand Italy game was pretty damn loud. I noticed Sepp Blatter was at that game and was trying to see if he was wearing ear plugs or not. Stupid old man!
