I wish I could get as animated as you about the result. I enjoy schadenfreude as much as the next misanthrope but this is just a hot-dog eating competition. I'm not sure the best way to counter the Japanese media obsession with Kobayashi is to celebrate his failure. I lived many years blissfully unaware of the contest so the reason I want Joey Chesnut to win for years to come so I can go back to ignoring it.

I really don't care about the competition at all, but it is one of those ridiculous things Japanese people point to with pride just because he is beating large, generally fat Americans at their own game. With that in mind, I see no problem indulging in a bit of schadenfreude.

Well, losing doesn't mean there isn't side opportunities...I love how they subtitled the only two words he says in the commercial in both English and Japanese...And unlike a J CM, since this CM is for puritanical America, you don't actually see him drink any beer in the CM

American keeps hot-dog eating crown in OT
NEW YORK (AP) -- Joey Chestnut has retained the top spot as winner of the annual hot dog eating contest in Coney Island after first tying with archrival Takeru Kobayashi in a 10-minute chow-down and then beating him in a five-dog eat-off.

Kobayashi had hoped to reclaim the throne after suffering a disappointing loss last year. He had reigned for six years.

Thousands gathered at Coney Island on the Fourth of July to watch the glutinous gladiators compete in the annual event. Chestnut emerged victorious, beating 20 others who had only 10 minutes to chow as many hot dogs as possible, two minutes less than in previous years.

The men tied at 59 frankfurters in 10 minutes, before being made to gobble another five dogs in a last-minute tiebreaker.

It interesting to note that douchebags at 2ch are saying that the rules were changed to favor a faster gaijin eaters with bigger mouths like Joey Chestnut (and to put Kobayashi at disadvantage because of his "jaw injury").

In overtime, Kobayashi and Chestnut both set a new record for eating most hot dogs in ten minutes.

Wait a minute, Kobayashi has a "jaw injury"? How does one go about attaining one of those?

I see a shirt that we should present to Kobayashi and to the runner-up in the 2008 AV Star Schlong Sucking Contest.

Japan's Eating Champion Beats American in Pizza Rematch

CULVER CITY, California — Japan's Takeru Kobayashi outlasted Joey Chestnut when the eating titans faced off to see who could devour the most pizzas.

Kobayashi, a six-time world hot dog eating champion from Japan, consumed 5 3/4 P'zones — a kind mixture between a pizza and a calzone — in a six-minute span of chaotic consumption Saturday to edge Chestnut. The 25-year-old from San Jose, California, wolfed down 5 1/2 P'zones on Stage 15 at Sony Studios.

Chestnut took an early lead, squeezing a P'zone in his left fist while alternately slugging from a water bottle. Soon, liquid splashed all over Chestnut's white jersey and dripped from his mouth.

Kobayashi took a tidier approach.

He roared back to take the lead for good on his second P'zone, tearing off bites of the golden crust, then folding it over and sipping carefully from a series of white paper cups that he refilled with water.

"The crust was very chewy so my technique was to try to drink as much water as possible to soften up the crust in my mouth," Kobayashi said through his translator.

NEW YORK (AP) -
Reigning champ Joey Chestnut has logged his third consecutive win in Coney Island's annual hot dog eating contest with a world-record 68 franks.

He made very specific claims that are pretty ugly. If they're not accurate I would expect some sort of response from Nathan's...

I don't know what the real story is, but one of the news broadcasts (AP) I heard yesterday said that the contract they offered him said that they would have the final approval of any other contests he would enter and that was the reason he would not sign. That does sound like a reasonable response by Kobayashi if that was correct...

Yeah, we need to hear the other side of the negotiations. Because Nathan's terms might be in response to Kobayashi's request for a certain dollar figure: like, sure, we'll pay you what you are asking for, but in exchange we get an exclusive.

"Major League Eating"? You've got to be kidding. Only in America I guess.
I had a look at the web site just for a laugh. In addition to the nifty trivia like EATER RANKINGS etc.,
I noticed that a major advertiser on the top page was Pepto Bismol.
How apt/ironic/abysmal...
