as i work with young kids, i move a LOT during the lessons and get sweaty.. and no deodorant ive tried so far really works!

and they dont come cheap! i dont really want to hassle my dad back in blighty for an everyday item...

You're in Sapporo, isn't it cold up there? Turn off the heating, the admin staff will smile upon you for saving electricity costs and you won't get so hot and sweaty. The students will hate you though.

None. Japanese deodorants are worthless. It actually makes you smell WORSE! I think it has something to do with different diets, though.. The roll-ons work a little better than the sprays.

I have 'care packages' sent every once in awhile. Or I buy a deodorant batch before I return to Japan.

Good luck!

i have tried to find not even a good one but at least a good "selection" of deodorants, and even that seems to be difficult. you go to tokyu hands shinjuku and you have a whole alley of fake dried flowers or shoelaces, but deodorant come in little size only, in an alley quite obscurely out of the way, aside, hidden, with no light.... strange.

the best thing i have ever found is the gillette clear gel series, which is an anti-perspirant deodorant but smells nothing, is very gentle with the skin, and last for many many hours. of course, there is NO way to find this in japan... or if there is, please anyone, let me know!!

the kinda-not-so-bad-est thing i found here would be a spray from uno that looks like brushed aluminium and is called ice direct deodorant. it's definitely not cheap, nor extremely efficient in the long run, but it works ok with me so far...

All UNO products are good but not cheap. I buy them when I'm caught away from home. Gillette Clear Gel is great stuff.

thanks for all your help guys/gals!

it`s really appreciated... i thought there must be like something amazingly good about jap deodorants for them to be so expensive, how wrong i was!

if only there was a deodorant for all those smelly otaku down the local arcade, and sweaty salarymen....!

btw, 393939393939 to Taro, thats a really kind offer, totally unexpected.. i couldn`t possibly though.. but, thank you!

well i`ll try one of those companies, and next time my dad sends me a package i`ll be sure to get a load in!

thanks again,

A lot of that death-breath of the barcode-zuku is actually symtomatic of stomach cancer. After working a year in a radiation biology lab raising cancer cell cultures, I can tell you that jiji-kusai is not just healthy Godzilla Breathfrom a night of fun.

It may sting at first, but alcohol works wonders under the arms as well.

As long as you aren't overly hairy under there.

It kills the bacteria that causes the odor.

I was itching and had a rash and couldnt use deodarant, and so used alcohol to dry out the rash, and found out that I stopped smelling pit funk.

Later I used it as a deodorant and it worked.

Stop gap solution.

What I've noticed is that the gaijin scent that we all choose to wear (Sure, Right Guard, etc) are somewhat strong or on extreme case.. offensive to most J-people. They are not used to anything with a punch and everything has to be dilluted here. The same goes with laundry detergents. I used to hall around the huge box of Tide and the people at my apartment always gave me that 'oh.. there's goes that fuckin gaijin' look.

I'm convinced it is again the "Fool's Valve" made famous by Jack Steward. If you look like a FG, you speak only English and you smell like an FG.

You could dog roll in sushi and pour and isho bin worth of nikyu shu over your head and they would still say "Yuk, gaijin no niyoi", followed by the various appropriate expletives for kusai!

It is probably due to a special ability to differentiate between odors that only Japanese have!

The only place I have found in Japan to get junk that works in The Body Shop...and I the last time I went to the one in Osaka they no longer sold Men`s stuff. There was an Australian company, Red Earth, I think that sold some, too. But I haven`t seen them in a while. Like toothpaste, it`s best to bring it from home.

I've given up searching for deodorant in Japan; Like a gaijin doesn't know good rice when they taste it, the Japanese don't know shit about deodorant..

I pay a little extra and have any kind of deodorant I want delivered to my door..

You mean kinda like one of those umami moments, the Japanese has no appreciation to personal scent.

I like to wear abercrombie & fitch cologn (I'm still a kid) or davidoff coolwater (my personal favs) and they always have to make comments about them and they are often not positive.

But B.O. is no laughing matter. I make sure I do not offend anyone around by wearing a deodorant but I wish I get the same in return from those stinkin' oyajis on the train.

Why is it that anti perspirants are not generally sold here - is it some regulation on the ingrediants that stop the sweat or is it something else?

I always bring in a supply of Mitchum from home or whenever I go OS or order off the net.

I make it a requirement for peeps visiting from the homeland to bring several sticks of Degree (any flavor will do) in exchange for my acting as tour guide. No Degree: No tour of Greji's Top Ten Debauchery Sites.

I find I go through about a stick a month of the stuff so I tend to buy 12 to 18 sticks of it when I get home... The shop clerks always look at me kinda funny, I guess it's not too common to buy the entire store's stock.
