TV trade-in?

Postby waruta » Wed Aug 25, 2010 7:40 pm

Anyone know where to get rid of some tv's? I have some old 37in CRT's lying around and the new LCD is coming....need some space.

The ojisan patrolling the neighborhood with the truck wants 3,000 yen a piece to get rid of them......so he can steal the precious metals out of it....:mad2:

It's just like the used car industry where they make people pay and then sell them on. Double profit.
I haven't heard of any trade-in type deals yet though they may come....you could see if a recycle shop will buy them off you.

Don't you have a sodai gomi day in your area? If so, track down the company that handles it and drop it off with THEM. They'll probably take them for no charge.

What is a sodai gomi... Stuff ???

I currently have at leats 5 old TVs, 2 or 3 minifridges and 2 folding coaches taking space... And no clue were to start...

The save the earth / recycle is cute and sh1t... But in fact it translate more to "die in your mess pack rat" than anything else...

There should be a couple of days a month designated for sodai gomi (basically "big trash") pickup in your area. You'll need to find out what day(s) ... call the ward office is one way. Then you'll need to purchase the appropriate sodai gomi stickers from your local conbini or the post office. Different types of sodai gomi require different stickers at different prices. You write you name on the stickers, and stick them to your trash. Then you call the sodai gomi number and make an appointment for them to come and pick it up. All you have to do then is make sure the junk is out in front of your house, or wherever, with stickers attached at the appropriate time on the pre-arranged day, and you're done.

It's simpler than it sounds, and you won't get ripped off by the assholes that come around in the sound trucks (you'll only get ripped off by the local government).

kei truck + local dump spot = problem solved.

I know it sounds brutal or illegal but these local dump spots would not exist if our tax money didn't have to pay for the nine hundred useless cunts at city hall to sit around. Out here people with Tokyo plates can be seen using the illegal dump spots. A two hour round trip ride in the mini van is cheaper than disposing of an ice box the "legal" way, plus one gets to see some "nature".

Another method the locals have been using is to find a remote trash pickup spot and just dump your shit there. Eventually someone will cart it away. Out of sight, out of mind seems to be the Japanese way of dealing with trash.

I think you missed the little part of me that I call the "by zee book anal retentive asshole". I'm still with knot on my stomach for the somewhat dark-orange traffic light that i passed this morning (right turn without green arrow... And me djooly was called for an emergency cesarian... Because usually unless i got a semi truck riding on my rear bumper i stop at the orange)

That hasn't been the case for nearly a decade.

All electrical items are only paid Sodai gomi via the city or ward office. It is cheaper than the recycle trucks but it will still cost a little bit. Call your ward or city office (or check their website) for the sodai gomi costs and system.

I was originally quoted 8000Yen to haul away a moped, mini-fridge, VCR, DVD player, and a couple computer monitors by one of the local ojisans. But after going back and forth between three of them (having all their names and quoting their prices to one another) eventually ended up paying 3500Yen.
Worth a try, anyway.

Since the Home Appliance Recycling law went into effect, TVs aren't sodai gomi any more. Depending on where you are, your city may not have anything to do with old TV disposal any more. Check with your city or ward, or with the shop you're buying your new LCD TV from.

I miss the old days of rummaging through piles of sodai gomi hunting for a new TV. (Furnished most of my first two apartments here that way...)
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Well, in some ways... But I would say probably only less than 1% of what was in the gomi piles got salvaged. The rest all went to a landfill somewhere. It was a great time to be a poor-ass gaijin with no shame though!

Lurker I did the same 18 years ago, but I would do it under the cover of night. Most people were lazy and would put the stuff out before they went to bed, so on those nights I would take a stroll in the neighborhood and see what I could find. I got a VCR, a dryer, a kotatsu table and a big ass stinky old toyu heater, that my cheap company would not provide for me.

Oh yeah, at night for sure. Huge piles of stuff all over the place! When I was first here in 1993 I got a desk, TV, and stereo from gomi. When I came back in '95 I got a great 27" TV, not even that old. The instant-on didn't work so it took a good 5 minutes before any picture would appear, but it was a great TV otherwise. I also had a gomi washing machine in '95 and a kotatsu too. Good times, good times. Well, I was broke as hell so there wasn't a lot of choice!

(Hell, the way the economy is going we could all end up picking through garbage again in the not too distant future... Let's hope not.)

I think I might have gone there one very inebriated night a few years ago.

Jack Off sounds like a perfectly good name for a gaijin-shacho to use for his company...;)
