each to their own. A mountain retreat, a house on the coast, and an apartment in the city sounds pretty good to me. I have many good friends in Tokyo too - Japanese and gaijin alike, and given that I've only just turned 40, it's not like I'm too old to enjoy myself..
I lived in Thailand for a few years, and that wasn't for me. Too sleazy and 'thirdworldish'.

I would never advise any of my friends/family to even come here for taking a tour. no way.

I understand about the apartment in the city feeling, I can say I have one (not so fabulous) but I came from a farm, so its was a step up i guess.

I like being here, sorta, better than Thailand (will take your advise on that) You should proll'y explain what Japan has to offer to tourist to the Japanese Tourism Bureau, they're having a major difficulty with getting tourists to here, all the hotel sales managers I speak to also hate the fact that Japan is a crap place for tourism...

Never taught Engrish though... Sorry that I cant join the club, but I will stay at the petting zoo near 2 chome with Greji!

hmm.. let's see....I'll be taking my parents to japan next year. Two weeks is all they are prepared to leave their beloved pet dog for, so I will have to plan their trip carefully, as there is LOADS of stuff to do!
Spring time is nice so that's the plan! I'll pick them up at narita and have them stay in the tokyu hotel in shibuya station. They will like this because they will be able to get off the train and get into the elevator which takes them straight to the hotel foyer. The view from the city there is awsome, and there are litterally thousands of restaurants to choose from.
Tsukiji fish markets,akihabara, harajuku, shimokitazawa, ginza are all on the cards, and so are day trips to mt.fuji, kamakura and yokahama china town. My parents want to see cherry blossoms so we will no doubt have a couple of hanamis in the parks at places like kichijoji or takao. I'm sure we will be busy trying to fit it all in with all of the shopping mum wants to do, and the bars dad wants to visit.
After Tokyo, we will catch the bullet train to Kyoto and spend a couple of nites in a ryokan whilst checking out the temples in the day. After that, we will get the Shinkansen to mie-ken and spend a couple of relaxing days in the lovely sea side village of toba. You can watch the obaa-San divers diving freestyle to fetch the famous mikimoto pearls, and using cormerat birds to fetch fish.
After this we will go back to Tokyo , more shopping and eating , then spend a couple of days in an onsen in one of the many resort onsen places near Tokyo - maybe Izu or yamanashi.
It will be time for them to go!
They will have to leave Nagano , Osaka, Hokkaido , Okinawa for next time.

I'm sure there will be plenty for them to do as first time visitors!

One aspect of these promotional efforts I don't care for is the way some appear to be saying the only way you can have an authentic experience in Japan is by paying through the nose.

Take a look at Real Japan which offers "Japan Luxury Tours for the Discerning Traveller". Most of the sights on their 10 day Tokyo-Kanazawa-Kyoto itinerary are also available to a budget backpacker. Staying at luxury ryokan will definitely set you back but it's hard to know how spending nights in the Mandarin Oriental in Tokyo and Hyatt Regency in Kyoto is particularly authentic.

I came across that link because it was part of a recent International Luxury Lifestyle Forum. Ishikawa prefecture is heavily involved with this project because they want to position Kanazawa as a luxury destination for overseas travellers.

Check out their Real Japan Ishikawa video. It's well shot but somewhat disfigured by a script which the two gaijin narrators struggle to imbue with any meaning or sincerity.

This kind of campaign will only make sense if they provide "VIP" channels at immigration, complete with designer fingerprinting booths and luxury fingerprinting machines crafted out of the finest wood with platinum-plated finger pads. All those super rich won't be very happy if they have to wait with the potential terrorist hoi-polloi.

You may love Japan but IPU is 100% correct that Japan is not a place that your average rich foreigner would consider retiring to. If you can't see that you need to pull your head out of your rose-tinted ass

The Tourist Agency has just announced a two year plan to turn Kyoto into a major destination for wealthy foreigners (no link). The city will work with the Agency to market itself to tourism industry conventions while conducting research on what will appeal most to that market. They also want to encourage more foreign hotel operators to open in Kyoto.

It looks like they have decided Kyoto has a better chance of offering an exclusive cachet compared with other destinations in the country.

If they're planning on selling class they'd better do something about the city's ongoing devolution to Shinjuku 2-chome status. The game centers, pachinko parlors, karaoke rooms, and multi-storied buildings full of claustrophobic bars are rapidly encroaching on the erstwhile classy bits and crowding them out. It's still quite nice once you get out of the city center, but just a decade or so ago the city itself had a really classic vibe that is now almost totally gone. Sad. And since so much of the lost atmosphere depended on historic architecture and old businesses, I kind of doubt that the trend is reversible.
