December 21, 2012 isn't all that far away....sadly, the world ends on a Friday, which pretty much ruins the weekend.

Fuck that shit. If the world's going to end, can't it do so on a Sunday evening just as the dread of having to wake up early the next day for work starts kicking in.

TOKYO – A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan's southern coast Tuesday, shaking a broad swath of the country and swaying buildings in downtown Tokyo.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported, and Japan's meteorological agency said there was no danger of a tsunami.

The temblor hit at 12:25 p.m. local time (0325 GMT), with the epicenter near the Ogasawara Islands, about 500 miles (800 kilometers) south of the main Japanese island, the agency said. It struck at a depth of 300 miles (480 kilometers) .........

What a bummer. Say Iraira, let's get together on Saturday for a drink and we can wrap up the end with a play by play analysis....

I'm planning on taking that Friday off, seeing if I can get all the zombies of girlfriends (one day/afternoon/evening/night stands included) together the night before, and freebasing Cialis. If the girls don't show up, I'll still base the Cialis and measure how long it takes to develop a rusty venture. Should be able to walk again by Saturday afternoon.

The apology for the Cleveland Steamer was costly enough.

Seems it was 5.2 on the J scale, centered outside southern Chiba.

Big Quake in Christchurch, NZ

Postby Yokohammer » Tue Feb 22, 2011 12:52 pm

I know it's NJR, but this is a heads-up for any of our NZ members who haven't heard about this yet.

Looks pretty nasty:
New Zealand police say there are reports of multiple fatalities in Christchurch after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake - classed as an aftershock to last September's devastating 7.1 magnitude quake - struck today, bringing buildings down on to two buses and trapping people in buildings.

Re: the Christchurch quake.

As of around 5:30 PM our time (JST) it looks like around 65 people have been confirmed dead. Many more are missing, so the total death toll will probably be pretty high.

It does not look promising.

Police have abandoned all hope of finding survivors at the collapsed Canterbury TV building in central Christchurch.

Inspector Dave Lawry said he was "100 per cent" certain those trapped in the building, including a non-sworn police staff member and a group of overseas students, were dead.

All emergency personnel have been moved away from the building because of danger the unstable Grand Chancellor Hotel would collapse onto it, he said.

He felt particularly sorry for the family of what is believed to be a group of Japanese students who died inside.

"At a certain point I'm not going to risk my staff for people where I believe there is no chance of survivability."

9.51am The Canterbury District Health Board says several members of the media were arrested last night for trying to break in and interview patients. A large number of those trying to get in were Japanese media.
From here

There's very little information about those missing Japanese but you'd hope the media would be a bit more classy.
