If it's Japan and it's flat there's people. Reuters reporting a ship carrying 100 people has been swept away.

SAVE ELECTRICITY

Postby omae mona » Fri Mar 11, 2011 8:55 pm

In our area in Tokyo, as of 2 minutes ago, the local disaster P.A. system speakers are asking everybody urgently to conserve electricity. It sounds like they are doing controlled blackouts in areas of Tokyo and Yokohama now.

I strongly recommend you charge mobile phones while you can.

Mrs. Taro and other employees of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (and Bank of Japan for that matter) are ordering bento and pizza and spending the night at in the TSE (& BoJ), which are A-bomb/earthquake proof buildings.

Unless you have inside contacts at a taxi company I think it's going to be pretty tough to find an empty cab today.

No need for that unless you are stupid enough to wait in line at the station like the rest. I just saw an empty one roll by outside.

CNN keeps talking about how "amazing" and "incredible" the tsunami is. I think they need to a)get a thesaurus, and b)learn some tact. I swear it's like they're on a loop.

Whenever they say "tsunami", in your mind replace it with the word "penis".

Hope Yokohammer is doing okay. Best I can figure he's about 5km from the coast and about equal distance from a river. Not the best place to be in a tsunami but at least not right on the coastline.

He's no dummy. Probably made tracks for the hills as soon as there was a pause in the shaking.

Hope he's okay. But by the looks of it alot of the damage up Sendai way is quake related as almost no structure can be built to withstand a 8.9. even if it occurs 100 km away.

Police say 200-300 bodies found at coastal area of Sendai. Ah, I see that Take's still being moderated, and already posted that. Official death toll 71 93 now, but this sad news will soon bump that number way up. :(

From the looks of the JMA site there were multiple quakes over a ~3 minute period starting at 14:48. The area where I think 'hammer lives was 6- to 6+ on the Japanese scale for the duration. Not quite the full-on 7 that a few areas got but still very, very strong quakes. Certainly hope that we hear from him soon and that he came through without injury.

Finally made it home on foot after a 10k walk from Tsukiji. The sidewalks were absolutely packed with people walking home, but we were still moving faster than the cars.

Somehow, my wife lucked out and managed to snag a taxi just after the quake to pick up our kid from school, so everyone's home safe.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.
