I couldn't see any way that gas-turbine generators that would fit on a cargo plane would be able to supplement city power requirements.

Whatever the case maybe, reports indicate that new power lines to the reactor to restart the cooling system are nearly finished. I hope this turns out to be true to help turn the tide on this mess.

In kanagawa, there was a warning on NHK about an imminent earthquake, I looked at the screen, thought WTF, then about 2 seconds later I felt it.

Cool, somewhere there is a system that does work on warning you about coming earthquakes, it even gives you a second to think 'huh'

I just figured out that NHK is putting the real Richter scale on the screen and the last one was a 5.8. D'oh! :wall:

Japan a robot power everywhere except at nuclear plant
Thu Mar 17, 2011 11:10am GMT&#160] Japan may build robots to play the violin, run marathons and preside over weddings, but it has not deployed any of the machines to help repair its crippled reactors.
While robots are commonplace in the nuclear power industry, with EU engineers building one that can climb walls through radioactive fields, the electric power company running Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi plant has not deployed any for the nuclear emergency...
...nuclear safety agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama said: "We have no reports of any robots being used."
...While Japan is renowned for its cutting edge technology, it also maintains an anachronistic element in its society that relies on humans for tasks that have given way to automation in many other parts of the world, such as operating elevators and warning motorists of road construction.[url=http://af.reuters.com/article/energyOilNews/idAFLDE72G00Y20110317?sp=true]...more...

I was wondering why the fuck they don't have a robot doing the work.

If American-designed robots can defuse bombs, a Japanese robot should be able to cool a reactor.

Also, radiation here is the equivalent of eating two bananas an hour... sounds like a nice breakfast.

One of the things I have learned through this mess is that the Richter Scale has been replaced by the Moment Magnitude Scale. For mid-level earthquakes (~5) they produce roughly the same number but for strong quakes MMS is apparently much more accurate.

Here is an interesting page (via Google Translate) that shows the radiation levels in most prefectures over the most recent 24 hour period.

I say "most" because Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima are mysteriously showing no data. Apparently this is due to "equipment failure" but one has to wonder...

Anyway, it's probably a good resource to send to people at home who are freaking out about radiation levels in your particular location.

Relatives in the US are starting to get annoying as fuck. I guess even the most level-headed of them finally turned to the dark side of US news hype and asked what my evacuation plans are. My snide response, "I've got two dates this weekend, but I will get up early to join the rest of the hoarders Saturday morning."

News is showing retirement homes where the workers carried the handicapped up flights of stairs during the tsunami....good thing it wasn't Tokyo, we all know how manly the men are here. Those old people would have had to crawl up the stairs themselves while the girly men were washed away crying.

...and finally some people on TV are being resourceful, siphoning gas from all the messed up cars rather than wasting time in front of the camera complaining about not having gas.

Apparently they have sprayed a lot of water at, and hopefully into, Reactor #3. Hopefully it will bring the radiation level down low enough to allow workers to start the cooling machines working.

Sir John Beddington of Imperial College London, also the UK's chief scientific officer, says he doesn't see Tokyo being impacted by a meltdown-explosion at Fukushima based on data and the experience of Chernobyl. Instead, he limits the range of radiation to a maximum of 30 KM.

His Wiki page says he's a Population Biologist....ummmm...ok, but there's a difference between nuclear radiation and adaptive radiation.

Not likely:

Attempts to cool down a stricken reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan have suffered a further setback with radiation levels rising rather than falling after attempts to douse it with high-pressure hoses.

In Ibaraki prefecture to the south, officials said radiation levels were about 300 times normal levels by late Wednesday morning. It would take three years of constant exposure to these higher levels to raise a person's risk of cancer.

I ain't spending three years in Ibaragi, no matter what the radiation levels are.
