Internet Oddities Since The Big One

Postby Mock Cockpit » Mon Mar 21, 2011 10:21 pm

I notice I haven't been getting any mail from sites I subscribe to like Rakuten, Yahoo, Amazon etc. I guess it's quake related in that for whatever reason these are choosing to not send out any mail. Thought I'd check if no-one else has been getting their usual advertising from these sites or others.

Another little glitch I've had that may or may not be quake related is via a subscription I have with ESPN Player to watch the cricket world cup at the moment. Since the 11th I haven't been able to watch and through my little contact with those useless bunch of cunts called ESPN tech support they asked me to do a trace route. Given ESPN hasn't been in contact for 5 days since I sent the results of the trace route and there's no other way to contact them I thought I might use the collective wisdom to troubleshoot.
  • ISP is Biglobe
  • unable to connect on any of my 3 computers (2x XP, one Windows 7 Starter)
  • asked a mate to check it for me on his computer (different ISP), said it worked fine. Fuck. Double fuck.
  • all other internet related stuff works as usual, no speed problems only this

Conclusion- Biglobe since the quake has changed the way they route traffic from some overseas servers and that has fucked up my service for this specific subscription.

Any faults anyone can see in my logic? Anything I can do?

Have you tried lowering your PC or router's MTU?

Y'know, I just realized that I haven't received any of my at least thrice daily Groupon offerings either...not that I'm in need of 75% off of a facial....feel free to insert a bukkake joke here.

She-e-e-it, do I have to state Japanese "common sense."

All, yes ALL, Japanese forms of advertising has been curtailed out of respect for dead.
Why do you think you are seeing thousands of AC uncommercials on TV? Sheesh.

That's a pretty kind way to look at it. I tend to see it as, "We don't want our products associated with all the reports of death and destruction." Not that I'm cynical or anything...

Pizzahut.jp has been fine sending me email about "how about a pizza while it's all nasty and rainy outside" and such with coupons and all.

I would have taken them up on it but I don't have $60 in cash lying around for pizza dinner for the family.

The "net supers" have all been having fun sending me email to tell me I can't order any groceries every day since the quake as well.

Just in case I missed the previous 9 I guess.

Ready made FG reply message below, copy, paste and fill in the blanks or select the appropriate items:

This sort of thing is a right PITA for anyone who is not technical.

This setting (MTU = Maximum Transfer Unit) controls the amount of data in each packet your computer sends. If the packets are too big then they get fragmented and things like secure web sites and data streaming stop working properly.

The recommended MTU for NTT FLETS Hikari is 1454. You will have to dig around in your router to find out where that setting is and change it. It is probably set to 1490 or 1492. Once that is done and your router has rebooted you need to set the MTUs on the computers on your network. YOU MUST DO THE ROUTER FIRST AND MAKE SURE IT HAS REBOOTED!

Now you need to determine what your computer's MTU size should be. Go here and download the TCP Optimizer. Run it.

Click on the tab labeled "MTU/Latency". Down the bottom there is a button that says "Largest MTU". Click on that and it will check to see what the largest MTU size you can use is. Write this down.

Go back to the "General Settings" tab. There is a drop-down list labeled "Network Adapter selection". Make sure you select the correct network adapter! If you change settings for the wrong one it will either have no impact or make other things work incorrectly.

Once you have chosen the correct adapter click on the "Custom" radio button option at the bottom. Enter your maximum MTU size into the box labeled MTU and then click on "Apply Changes".

Reboot your computer.

This should fix the problem if it was related to incorrect MTU settings.

FG, appreciate your post mate, very informative. However, I got a reply from ESPN today
Due to the natural disaster in your area and damage to the infrastructure of the network connections to our content servers, your ESPN Player Cricket subscription has been canceled and a refund initiated. Please allow 5-7 days for your bank to process your refund. Please let us know if you have additional questions.

Cunts put it in the too hard basket. I tried to use it last night and of course it was working fine. I never have these problems with the pirate streams....yeah yeah I know not meant to talk about that.
