They are called NiGONEjin.

I don't take credit for this word - I saw it on the net the other day and have been looking for a place to use it.

That would certainly be the preferable option! (No offense to Greji but I'm no Bo-Sensei...)

I guess I'm an inadvertent "slyjin" then (my move to Kyushu timed to just after the disaster struck). Not an evacuation to the jikka, but a move that had been planned months ago.
It's a whole different world down here. Of course everyone is aware of the situation up north, but about the only thing noticeable in daily life is a shortage of D size batteries, signs limiting sales of water to one crate per person (people send these items to friends and relatives) and higher gasoline prices.

Just came back from my spring breakie in Saipan and there was an inordinate number of Yaks down there this spring. I would have thought the business opportunities for selling tap water to Tokyoites would have overridden their fears.

Just got back from my spring break too. Narita was deserted..

And if u ask me, Japanese people are always looking for a reason to look down on gaijin.

When everything was fine: "gaijin go home"

Now: "you abandoned us flyjin"

It's in their nature to hate anything that isn't "pure" jp.

I owe these people NOTHING!! And will gladly leave again at the drop of an isotope.

I am sure that some Japanese would have reacted exactly the same way to local crises in other countries.

Or even that this is a relevant topic for any meaningful number of Japanese? I wonder if all the whining might be a response of English-language news media carrying this meme on based on one original article. Personally, I have only seen the term used on 2ch in limited amounts. Is the author's sense that foreign residents are being "judged" based on reality, or paranoia?

I've only seen it used on this forum and in articles linked to from here. And one friend in the US used it in a message he sent to me on Facebook. Otherwise haven't encountered anyone who really cares one way or the other.

Yoshinoya mentioned today that 200 foreign part-timers left the company in the week following the quake. This Jiji article mentions it represents about 1 in 4 of the total. This cause them some staffing problems which they are only now just overcoming. Having said that, the company reported same store sales were up 0.8% year-on-year in March.

The International Association for the Study of Pain has decided to move its August 2012 conference - The World Congress on Pain - from Yokohama to Italy on account of the uncertainty in Japan.

Huh?
You'd think Japan would be the perfect venue for a conference about "pain" right now.

I was talking to a French friend last night and he's bailing ship. He's selling everything he can't take at a loss and getting out. He's an engineer and used to work on a nuclear sub but still doesn't trust what we're being told about radiation exposure and he's worried about the big one hitting closer to home next time.

I should mention that he hates the place and was planning to leave by the end of this year anyway. It makes me wonder if he's not just using this as a way to scare his J-wife into agreeing to move sooner than later.

You know whats really funny? Its my wife who kept (and still keeps) insisting that we leave Japan...

I think eventually we probably will. I give it another 2 or 3 years.

Im already looking for jobs overseas, and starting to sell my shit on ebay/yahoo auction.

No rush or anything...

No kids yet, but we are working on it. (every single night:cool: )

I think if we do move, her mother will come with us. (father passed away)

Basically, weve both had enough of Japan and those quirky jp ways!

Just yesterday I told her a face palming story that made her cringe and say: "We need to GTFO"

Jp person 1: Do you have "kahun-sho" in foreign countries? (hay fever)

Jp person 2: Of course they dont!

Me: errrr... yes we do....

Jp person 2: [death stare]

The whole quake issue doesn't help. And neither did the hoarding.

I think shes afraid of having a baby here. (and I dont blame her)

How many of you are getting the "Why are you still here?", or "When will you be leaving Japan?" from Japanese.

I don't whether it pisses me off, or I'm just embarassed by Japanese, some whom I know pretty well asking me this shit.....

Also, just as bad, is a cousin of mine, who I don't particularly care for to start with and without telling me, has been calling our relatives and friends of his, trying to find me a place to stay when I come back to the USA. I asked the dipshit why he was making arrangements for my wife and I without telling us. His reply was to the affect of who could live in that place, that is soon to be a nuclear wasteland.

Shit. I'm going to Roppongi for a jolt.
