So is the hole in the ground the original source? If so, how'd the oil get there? Is it runoff from other restaurants?

Yes, from what I understand, that is from the "manhole". And they collect from the drain outside the restaurants.

* Those who understand both Japanese and English (and have courage & perhaps a strong stomach) please help to brief/ explain this horror story.

Gotta admire the Chinese on at least one point. From time to time they execute slimy company execs whose greed gets people killed.

If you ignore safety standards to increase your annual bonus, and people die, it is no different than shooting people on the street for their money.
Except in many places, the murdering mugger will get life in prison or the death penalty, and the murdering company exec will get 5 years in a country club and then a safe retirement with the money he stashed in Switzerland.

Only problem is the Chinese execs who get executed are probably just the ones who aren't rich enough to come up with the necessary bribe money.

...and yet they worry about what's coming out in from Japan. With all the insanity that goes on there, even radioactive Japanese food would seem like a step up.

China farmers face 'exploding' watermelon problem

Farmers in eastern China have been left perplexed after their watermelons began to explode one by one.

An investigation by state media found farms in Jiangsu province were losing acres of fruit because of the problem.

The overuse of a chemical that helps fruit grow faster was blamed in one report by China Central Television.

But agriculture experts were unable to explain why chemical-free melons were exploding. They cited the weather and abnormal size of the melon as factors.

China Central Television said farmers were overspraying their crops with the growth promoter, hoping they could get their fruit to market ahead of the peak season and increase their profits.

Also from the above article:
According to the Xinhua news agency, 20 farmers in a village in Jiangsu province planted imported seeds from Japan, with 10 households saying their watermelons began exploding last month.

Hmm, that's funny as my father-in-law here in Japan has been growing watermelons for years, and I've never heard of one "blowing up".
I have seen Okinawan goya (look like warty cucumbers) that have gone to seed, and they split open (albeit not "blowing up" per se). Maybe the chemicals (or something already in the soil) accelerated the growth to the point of splitting open.

It's bad enought to be negligent and not catch accidental contamination of food but to purposefully put chemicals that will kill people into food is fucking unbelievable.

My guess is that they mean "split" open when they say "explode".

Also, I recently read where they actually eat human meat in Russia and North Korea. And did you ever notice how amazingly beautiful Russian and North Korean women are?

Yeah... sure... Russia and DPRK on the same level... everytime we think we know just how stupid you are you need to push it to 11 a little more...

If the Russians have problems it's more from traffic jams and drunk policemen sleeping on the job than with famine... They are not even the de-facto bad guys anymore in war movies...

A cannibalistic serial killer is not the same thing as starving people in North Korea eating humans as a last resort. You are thick as a fucking brick with just enough crazy to make you persistently annoying.

But SJ, when the choice is that, or a Turd Sandwich on Rye, it's a tough choice...
