Finding a kotatsu stateside?

Postby Osakadave » Tue May 31, 2011 9:12 am

Anybody have any suggestions on finding a real kotatsu stateside? My online searches seem to lead only to "Kotatsu" style coffee tables without the heating element. Slowly but surely my new apartment's getting decked out with the comforts I miss, and a kotatsu would be just the thing for this next winter.

What do you live in the ghetto? Turn on the central heat.

That's why he's looking for the kotatsu. That will be his central heating system....
:p

Back to the question. Dave, do a google search on "Japanese Kotatsu" and you'll get a lot of hits including this oneabout building your own, which is not much of a site, but has some interesting ideas......

They are sold at Uwajimaya in Seattle, but they don't have them on their website. Maybe you could call their gift department. 206-626-6248.

This spring has been so cold my wife still has our Kotatsu set up at our house.

Just buy a photo of one and put it on your wall next to the thermostat.

So as not to start another thread, I was wondering where you could find a traditional futon for sale online. I'm tired of slat beds, and the simplicity of a futon seems appealing.

If you find one make sure it has been approved for sale in the US. It's been so long that I forget what the mark is, in Canada it would be the CSA. If it hasn't been approved and it burns your house down you may have problems with your insurance company.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking of. There may be others as well.

So I take it you do live in a place run by a scumbag slum lord who won't fix the heating. Otherwise I can't think of any other reason for needing a kotatsu in the US.

No, I don't need it. It'd just be nice to have one.

To me the kotatsu is the ultimate symbol of everything wrong with shoddy Japanese housing. I fucking hate those things. The cobination of a freezing cold head with sweaty balls and feet is not appealing at all.

That's why you fit in here so well. :D (I'm also kinda surprised it took you so long to notice...)

Don't have a kotatsu but I don't dislike them. Always kinda thought of them as the living room version of an onsen...

A little while ago, ahhh, when I was in college, during the winter, my room, sized about a mat and a half, of course had no heat, but I did have a kotatsu and on extremely cold nights, I actually slept stuffed half way underneath it and have no embaressment and/or qualms about admitting it.
