Where do you originate from? What great place did you leave from to become a FG?

....Well choose the one that you call "home".

I was born in NZ but mostly raised in the UK. I have right of abode in the UK,NZ and EU. I call the UK "home".........but having said that the longer I am FGing, I am finding the concept of "home" rather illusionary.. 8O

.....Most the (British) Commenwealth countries allow you to hold as many passports as you can get your hands on. I know someone with a NZ,Aus, and UK passport! Both USA and Japan are a bit stingy on that one :(

Quite so! The more time I spend outside the US, the less it feels like home. Home is where ever I happen to be at the time.

USA and Canada
Used the Canadian passport as get-of-jail card several times in free-fire zones in the 3rd world. Weirdly, if I try to use the Canadian passport in either USA or Canada, it'll be confiscated 'cause both countries have issues with defacto-dual nationals.

I thought Canada was OK about dual nationals - I know quite a few people who have both Canadian/British or Canadian/Australian passports - no problem.

...Its is surprising that when you board a plane all the details of whos on it is sent across the world. Like I left UK on my British passport - going to Australia and since I have a NZ passport - which means I dont need a visa - I tried to enter Aus on my NZ passport - it was OK but I was stopped, questioned and had to show my UK passport too. :?

Do you have to declare your dual nationality status?

Urrrrr, ummmm, in my case the Viet Nam War caused my "dual" status a bit of grief.

My Canadian passport is way too convenient for me to relinquish....such as when I was in Arbil Irag two years ago under an Othrodox "pilgrim's" status. :hehe: .

I call Japan home at the moment.. that is why I find it really tough sometimes, as I don't strongly identify with my nationality.. but then other people are more comfortable if they are able to label me as one thing or another.

I guess you can say that I am Australian, with an eccentric British upbringing.

Sure I miss things about Australia - mainly the beach, but not enough to take me back there just yet. I guess if I wasn't living in Tokyo, I would be comfortable living in London or New York. I am a big city girl at heart.

My parents live in Japan too.

I am always curious as to how the people with Japanese nationals as spouses.. do you consider that you will be here for life - ie you have immigrated to Japan and so should be thought of as a Japanese national? or do you still think of yourself as your original nationality or are you in a kind of limbo.

Taro, Steve? You guys have been here for ages..

I guess it is best just to identify with yourselves and your families...but it seems to be an obsession of both FG's and Japanese people, that they label you as one nationality or another.

This is weird for me, as a child of an immigrant, the place where you choose to live becomes your new home and you think of yourself as the new nationality.. hell, countries like Australia and USA expect that their new arrivals assimilate as quickly as possible.

But in Japan... well - you know what I mean.

Serious discussion about this can be found at the NBR

NBR wrote:http://lists.nbr.org/japanforum/showMessage.asp?ID=12690
"...a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship...." and that even if you applied for a foreign citizenship you would only lose it if you applied "...with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship."

...There are a few more links about dual citizenship on this page:
