TassieGaijin wrote:Please, no snide, facetious remarks.

So my question is this:

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to spend at least some long term time in Japan. I finally visited last year for a couple of weeks, and I had a blast. It sealed the deal for me, once I graduate (next year) I was going to move.

Well, the earthquake happened, and the subsequent nuclear 'fallout' after that. I was undeterred, focused on still moving to Tokyo post graduation and teaching English. Well after discovering this site, and numerous others (especially after extensive reading of this site: http://ex-skf.blogspot.com/ ), my opinions changed, and suddenly I wasn't so keen. I have become resigned to the fact that living long term in Japan may not be viable, since I have the luxury of having the option of avoiding and I don't quite like the idea of exposing myself to potential radioactive toxins due to the Japanese governments poor handling of the entire situation. Who can you trust? I still have a glimmer of hope of still fulfilling my dream, but as more information is released (and more radioactive shit from Fukushima) I feel less inclined.

Am I overreacting? Are my concerns unfounded? Is it safe to still live in Tokyo (or Osaka) long term without potential long term radiation exposure through various means such as food, water, numerous other environmental factors? Or is there a genuine threat to one's health and if given the opportunity, should avoid at all costs?

If you live behind the confines of Mori Tower or Tokyo Midtown or in the Park Hyatt friend, you will be ok, but only if you don't go out to work, and make sure the food is all pre March 2011, and also if they have installed special air filters, and anti alpha/beta/gamma radiation filters on windows, doors etc. Read more. Otherwise you will be exposed to some of that good :glow2: which is fine if you want to mutate but for the rest of us, it aint much good.

via Asia Tube TV *which cannot be linked to

The Japanese Government is Destroying Japan
Professor Christopher Busby: "What's happening now as I'm told is that the Japanese government are trucking radioactive material from the Fukushima disaster area where it is contaminated, all over Japan. And even as far south as the south of Japan, we are now getting reports of radioactive material being taken all the way to the south of Japan to be burned."

"Now what possible reason could there be for burning it as far away as that? I'll tell you the reason. It's really quite sinister and horrifying. The reason is this: eventually when these children start to die from leukemia, from other cancers, from heart disease from whatever, their parents are going to want to go into court, they're going to want to sue the Japanese government, and they're going to have to want to say that in order to do that these children were contaminated and that's why they got high levels of cancer. But of course, the only way that they can say that they have got high levels of cancer is to have a control group in an area that's not contaminated. For example, the south of Japan."

"So I believe that the project to take this material and burn it all over Japan is to destroy all of Japan, is to increase the cancer rate in the whole of Japan so that there will be no control group to which you can compare these children in the Fukushima area."

As conspiracy theories go, that one's pretty dumb. As if there are no valid "control groups" in neighboring countries. Or as if an increase in local cancer rates isn't going to be damning enough. Even the Japanese government isn't that stupid.

You've got it backwards. The tsunami did most of the damage. The power plant problem is minimal. A small radius was evacuated, but the radiation there should be gone in a few weeks. If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings notwithstanding.
