Typhoon 15

Postby Coligny » Tue Sep 20, 2011 9:04 pm

Seems to be a bitch... (again).

1 milliun evacuated in Nagoya (well... ordered to evacuate... now I really wonder where they are supposed to go...)

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20110920x1.html

Don't forget to pray for Omarion guys...

(Coligny reporting live from Toyohashi... where it has not even rained since yesterday... meanwhile... the streets are now roamed by wilds red Unimogs... these things must really be a huge fun to drive...)

Well, we have only had about 120 mm of rain since this morning but fornutately no winds. It does look like it is strengthening and heading towards you so I wouldn't make any plans to go riverboat cruising or repairing the rooftop.

Sirwanksalot reporting live from Toyohashi as well. The surf has picked up slightly from yesterday. Was fun. Will be heading down that way again tomorrow armed with a few boards and a camera.

That bitch of a tropical storm hung around here for a week, with squalls, waves and wind, alway threatening, rubbing up against us, but then ran away to play with some other landmass.

By my rough calculations and this nice US Navy map, I reckon the bugger will be passing directly over Fukushima. I hope they got all their blue tarps secured.

The Big Nag got stung pretty bad back in September 2000. How does it compare this go-round?

Which... means absolutely nothing...

Because if mum water the flowers after 3 days of sushine that could also fall under the "most rain in Toyohashi in the past few days".

The parking is wet with no puddle but drying. So it rained last night but not much.

And sunday was 19. There was a marathon in Okasaki, hot humid but no rain. Here, extremly hot, but not much rain to remember either (again in central Toyohashi, which as lot of countryside crapholes includes a lot of farmland under its name)

Freakin' cornucopia of natural disasters this year. Damn!

They're talking about the possibility 40 m/s winds in Tokyo (40 m/s is the maximum that Tokyo's utility poles are designed to withstand, by the way), and then that fucker will be up here right along the coast where people are still picking up the pieces from the quake and tsunami. Lovely.

Hopefully it'll lose a bit of oomph if/when it lands in Shizuoka, as forecast.

Actual wind are 45 m/s -> 160km/h

Actual typhoon -TRAVEL- speed 35 km/h

(which is quite 'le sux' because it don't leave it much time to lose power on the way, hope it travel as much as possible inland before Tokyo because the coastal sea is quite unfortunately warm providing needed power...)

So all the locals at my office here in Tokyo are starting to get worried about whether or not their trains will be running this evening. I'm hoping they can convince the bossman to send us home early.

(seems we are on the path of the eye, seriously, I don't know what kind of demonic pact the mayor entered but I think we were more than lucky compared to Nagoya... Even If I have to buy a new parking exit mirror and fix it properly this time)

Looks like the typhoon has landed just above you, somewhere near Hamamatsu, so your parking mirror will probably be spared.

Too late for the mirror...

Rain nearly stopped but the winds from the tail are really bad. (like I can't stand up outside bad and it sucks because i'm all outta cheezeburgers).

So if it stay like this. Get back before the end of the rain, if you wait for the eye to pass it's gonna be much harder.

This was the one in 2000 that nailed Nagoya. I picked up a group of friends at Nagoya Station that night after the trains stopped, and drove them to all points in Aichi and Gifu. The van almost got washed off the road up near Ichinomiya...

I was working in Nagoya at the time. Farking pissed down for like 6 hours straight. Waded through the floods to the station at around 6 or 7pm, bought ticket, sat on train for 10mins, no trains working so waded back to the office and slept there.

In the morning went back to train sation, same train there with some very tired japs in it. Train left a few mins after I arrived ha ha.
