American parents have been using such, uh, creative spellings lately that they might as well be using obscure kanji because we have no idea how to pronounce or spell the names. This site is always good for a laugh: http://www.stupidkidnames.com/

It seems like the trend is going in the opposite direction in Brazil.

and my inlaws were a bit angered when my first son didn't have a Japanese name in his name...

quite frankly... japanese boy names are just dont sound good IMO... The only ones i like are Ken (no taro or ta) and Keisuke... no appeal otherwise.

girl names are just iffy for me... reminds me of the stupid names gig...

I don't know if I entirely buy that. I quick look at my second year nursing college roster indicates that 9:51 girls have a name ending in 'ko'. I'm too lazy to bother going back ten years but I don't think the ratio has changed much.

While I have to agree, you can get a little better variation if you go to another country ;)

Yumi and Emi could certainly be abbreviated from Yumiko and Emiko.

That's right. But I noticed that all young couples avoid the "ko" like the plague. Most of my wife's friends had names not ending with 'ko" I thought that's so unsual, but then I found out that Michi, was Michiko, Yumi, was Yumiko, Mayu was Mayuko and so on. All the ladies in their 30s and 40s had "ko" but were not using it and for sure their kids do not have names ending in "ko".

I looked at my kid's elementary class list, and noticed 5 names that I've never heard before:
Kihori, Asato, Sakuto, Arimu, and Miru

However, they don't even come close to some of these oddball names picked from a list of names in 2010. Some of the names are clearly foreign names that had kanji assigned. The following names cannot be read without the accompanying furigana. They were chosen by parents due to "the way they sound", then kanji was randomly thrown at them (whether it could be read or not).

Image

- Boy's names:
Towaru, Daia
Karuma, Sena (Senna?)
Akari, Teruhiro
Aoto (out?), Kayoo
Shizuma, Hyuuga
Ruka (Luka?), Toa
Miko, Tora
Yua, Haruma
Riku (Rick?), Shachi (killer whale - WTF?)
Ruuku (Luke?), Hazumu
Roto, Taiga (Tiger)
Koe, Roi (Roy?)

- Girl's names
Runoa (Renoir?), Miyu
Mia, Ruika
Kirara, Rena (Layna?)
Nanami, Rion (Leon?)
Ten, Moka (mocha?)
Honoka, Manaki
Harua, Minori
Rise, Kana
Riku (Rick?), Rino (Reno?)
Runa (Luna?), Kokoa (cocoa - seriously?)
Yumea, Mairi (Miley?)
Mahiro, Uzuki

It seems that Riku, Akari, and Yua are now unisex names.
Tiger doesn't surprise as I have encountered others with that name, born of course in the year of the tiger. But seriously, "Shachi" as in killer whale, dayum.

People who go out of their way to give their kids unusual names are assholes. Having a kid is selfish enough. No need to make their shitty existence even worse by giving them a stupid name.

Change "unusual" to ridiculous and I'm right there with yah. (Unusual is too relative a term)

When you've met a girl named "Ketchup" you tend to view how people name their kids differently. ;)

When I was in elementary school some kids of refugees from Vietnam were named Fork and Spoon.
There was a hippy kid named River too.

my wife's cousin's daughters names are:
Julia (jyuriya)
Lion (rion)

I asked if "Lion" was a boy and they said it was a girl... i chuckled and told them that it was a boys name... they changed the topic and said that it was spelled like lion... I chuckled again and said that she would get laughed at in the US if she showed someone her ID car...

good times...
