I was gonna guess China but either the blade would fall off or the blade would shatter up such an act. Stainless steel in China is like recycled aluminum foil...

If it's not Chinese that is, no telling what kinds of toxins and heavy metals are in Chinese "aluminum."

It's pretty crazy if you think about all the "traditional" food from around the world that are the result of Columbus bumping into the Americas on his way to India.

- Tomatoes
- Potatoes
- Corn
- Peanuts
- Chili Peppers
- Pineapples

I thought the warning was only issued if the expected maximum "shindo" was 5 or higher. In this case since the magnitude at epicenter was 4.9 the max. shindo wouldn't be any higher than that.

By the way ... didn't feel a thing.

Felt it like a mofo here in Chiba. That was only a 4.9?

Felt the pre-shocks vibrate before I felt the whole thing starting to move. The phone didn't make a sound but helpfully announced an earthquake had happened a full 30 seconds after it passed. Useless.

Probably not the thread for this, but in brief it's a combination of: 1) to boost my immune system*, 2) to lose weight**, and 3) I'm so damn busy with "life" that I need the sober/hangover-free time to take care of it all.***

So far so good!

I think I can bring this back on topic, sorta ...

I had initially planned to make it a short 3-month stint until my birthday in March. But then the big earthquake and tsunami struck (see! we're back on topic!), and staying sober so I could jump in the car and drive at any time became a matter of survival for a while. So I just stayed with it.

Another bonus is that my concentration has improved quite a bit.

What were we talking about...?

Oh yeah! I remember being encouraged to drive drunk home from parties not long after I first arrived here. Things have changed since the mid-to-late '90s.

I admire your discipline. Kinda reminds me of General Lee...

I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it.

I know this disappoints many, but congrats. I've been an oolong cha teetotaler since 1997 (condiments other than alcohol possibly not included in such a ban, I use the word "possibly" should this post wind up in my file at immigration), although I encourage rampant consumption of anything by those that wish to consume. Found that I also saved a lot of money once the ethanol was evicted from my wallet. (see Jew York video in another thread)

And yes! That's another bennie that somehow escaped my sobriety-enhanced memory and concentration: the cost of living gets considerably cheaper.

LOL, I was at a rest stop in Tochigi when it hit. Browsing the magazines while waiting for a lemur to come out of the restroom. I couldn't feel it at all while standing but the magazine rack in front of me was making all the fake boobies on the magazines jiggle right before my very eyes.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck deep under the ocean floor northwest of Okinawa, Japan, near noon Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor, which hit at 11:59 a.m. (9:59 p.m. Monday ET) was measured at a depth of 209.5 kilometers (130.2 miles), according to the USGS.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any alerts, saying there was no tsunami generated by the quake.

The epicenter was 218 kilometers (136 miles) northwest of Naha, Okinawa, and 497 kilometers (309 miles) from Taipei, Taiwan, the USGS said...

A bit of a rare shaker down here, similar to the one we had in late Feb. 2010.
