DIY advice

Postby GomiGirl » Sat Nov 19, 2011 10:05 pm

Got a boring domestic question about curtain rails - specifically the moveable rings that you hook into. I have some additional ones in one room and I don't have enough in another.

Is there an easy way to move these clips from one rail to another? Or am I stuck with a fixed number of rings per rail?

At the end of a rail there is usually a stopper that is fixed by a screw. If you loosen the screw and remove the stopper, you can take some of the rings for your other rail. However, depending on the actual construction, it may be done in a different way, or it may be impossible at all. If it does not work out as I describe here, please, post a picture of the end of a rail, so someone can figure it out.

Good luck!

Home centre sell those rings, so it shouldn't be a problem. (They seem to call those rings "runner" in Japan). I checked around and saw somebody posted a similar question online and all answers were positive too. Here is a link with picture showing how a blind curtain is fixed on a curtain rail that might help to give you the idea. http://www.rakuten.co.jp/kurenai/444325/472173/ (See pic with numbered 3 for the side cap/cover))

(Sometimes the cover that can be unscrewed might just be on one side, so do check both sides)

To me, anyway, a "runner" in Engrish would be a rail...but I know that really doesn't matter a lick. Just saying.

Answer after the war but... Yeah, where they sell curtains, they also systematically seel the little trolley with ring. They are in nylon and break from time to time, they are basically expandable. One advice, if you add some... add more than needed...

They also sometime have special middle trolley with twin axle and a magnet so two of them put in the middle can help holding two half curtains closed in the middle (in front of an open window... or if you have some fooking cats that can't leave the curtains alone at night and open them so you got too much sun in the morning...)

i think he meant: use the proper tools...
(ladder AND workshop rule#1: for philips head screws ALWAYS use the biggest screwdriver possible, the small one only damage the inner head without applying the proper tork to unscrew...)

if philips head is to small go to a flat head. I usually do that from the get go to save the screw from damage.

and if all else fails, super glue the driver to the screw, dry, unscrew, then apply some butanone (aka methyl ethyl keytone/MEK) to get the glue off.

You often do repair work on aircraft carriers ?

Usually anything that would require more than a #2 philips is replaced either with an hexa head or a standard bolt. (or is an hybrid half philips half bolt head so you can choose your pain)

Superglue (cyanoacrylate) also come off in boiling water. In fact this kind of glue really don't like heat... But has marvellous 'out of the box use', it's one of the best way to close a wound when you are out of reach from proper rescue and I even repaired a broken teeth like that... held a good week... before i drank too hot tea... then it wuz bu-bye...

i usually repair what someone else couldn't... so flat heads or super glue were my standard tool...

with multiple screws and superglue, a shot glass of MEK does the job for the day (after filtering the glue out after 4 or so screws).

super glue does wonders with open laceration and puncture wounds. i had a strip of skin taken off before... didn't even consider gluing it and went right to the needle and thread.

would have been better if i had some spare cat gut threaded out and not too old.

Keep with the original posting Coligny! Now, when you remove the cap at the end of the rail and get the proper number of "runner" rings on to the rail, replace the cap, secure it and you can immediately begin to hang cats from the rings.......

Back on topic....

I bought some additional hook things and also a magnetic joiner for the centre of the window. I took out the trusty screw driver and was able to take the little dohicky off the end and thread them all on.

The rail was nearly flush with the wall on both sides of the room so I had to take off a few extra screws so I could bend the rail enough to get the end dohicky thing off. But I managed it.

So now all the screws and dohickies are replaced and I have hung the curtains again. They look awesome!! Even better as I was able to DIY it.

Thanks to everybody that replied and especially to Greji who even called me on the phone for his usual heavy breathing routine but finished off by providing some invaluable DIY advice.

"one of the goats" meaning that the other was cleaning the router and the one breathing over his shoulder was giving him a reach around.

That's our good ol' Greji!
