The above video shows Kumamoto's "Kumamon" winning the nationwide mascot competition. Here's my favourite picture:

They help collect taxes, promote tourism and save the environment, but Japan's mascots cannot escape controversy

He is a genuine household name in a country where celebrities are ten a penny. His rosy cheeks and unreadable expression appear on hundreds of products, from sweets and snacks to bags of rice, stationery and toys – part of a commercial portfolio worth almost 30bn yen last year.

That's not bad for a cuddly black bear with a mischievous streak, who has risen from humble beginnings promoting a new bullet train station in southern Japan to become the country's pre-eminent mascot.

Kumamon – a combination of the words Kumamoto, his home prefecture, and the local pronunciation of mon, or "things" – has built up a following to rival that of fellow bears Pooh and Paddington since being named Japan's most popular mascot two years ago.

Japanese governor gives Harvard lecture on official mascot Kumamon
2013 Nov. 12 / GlobalPost
Kumamoto Gov. Ikuo Kabashima on Tuesday visited Harvard University near Boston with “Kumamon,” the popular black bear mascot of the southwestern Japanese prefecture, to give a lecture on how the cuddly character has helped “maximize the overall happiness” of residents…
…”Kumamon’s universe expands on its own,” Kabashima said, adding that it is created by fans, businesses and media.
Kumamon also showed up and danced to the tune of a song named after the character...

As silly as that shit sounds, it's hard to say the promotion of kumamon isn't successful.

....and then there's this:

At Harvard, more than 100 students and other people packed the hall to listen to the lecture, entitled "Kumamon's political science and economics," by the 66-year-old governor with a doctorate in political economics from the Ivy League school

Golden statue of Kumamon
Ky0d0 News | May 1, 2014
A pure gold statuette of Kumamon is unveiled by Tanaka Kikinz0ku Jewelry in Tokyo’s Ginza district. The statue, with a price tag of 1OO million yen, weighs ten kilograms and stands about 18 centimeters tall.
real-goldbricker.jpg

Let's do the Japanese math.
--The solid gold Kumamon weighs ten kilograms but costs 1OO million yen ($975,772 USD).
--Today’s price for ten kilograms of gold is 42,336,234 yen or $413,104.94 USD.
Hmmm, that seems a bit high for a gold bricker.

A few.

But they need the half-a-million-dollar fee to cover the artist's inspiration...

AKB48's Haruna Kojima & Bear Mascots Gather for Ted 2 Event
ANN | 2015-Aug-27
AKB48's Haruna Kojima recently appeared as a member of the "Ted Fan Club" at a Japan promotional event for the U.S. film, Ted 2 last week...
...
Also in attendance was Ted himself along with a team of Japanese bear mascots including Kumamon, ZomBear and Melonkuma among others. Kojima dealt with a lot of activity from the bears as Melonkuma tried "eating her" and Ted became rather hands-on with the pop star, as per his crude nature. The many bears got along well as they went on to lounge briefly on stage and interact with each other.
